Clean the splines on the axles and cv joints. They do indeed float and find their own place.

I’ve used these on 2 cars with IRS and bus transmissions. One car also had 1 5/8” narrowed control arms.

They DO INDEED float, after some deburring and cleaning of the splines... Embarassed

Thank you all for your help!

My axles are too long Crying or Very sad I need to shorten them. But how to best?

I have a small lathe and think about using a thin disk in a grinder to make the new slots and shorten.

Any advice on how to determine the correct length?

Thank you

If your lathe isn't big enough, find one that is. All you need is a parting tool to cut the groove for the clip.

Rick, my worry was the hardness of the splines. The axle fits on my lathe, so I will order a thin parting tool and give it a try Cool

I bought a 1.5mm parting tool with hardened inserts and gave it a try...

Used soft inserts on the lathe chuck to not damage the splines and get maximum surface contact. The remaining 5mm where broken off, than ground flat on a disc sander. The hardened splines and shafts ate 5 inserts Twisted Evil

All done:

Great work
Don't forget to mark you axles R & L and inner and outer so they always go on the same way.
some axles take a 'set' so you don't want to run them backwards

Nice job! Put a chamfer on the end to make it easier to slide the cv joint on.
