It’s beautiful! Such a classic color combination, looks very close to the prototype. I’ve been looking at the one in the classifieds that is the same color, I’m hoping he will still have it when I’m in Belgium in the spring, would love to see an original like that. Congratulations on a beautiful restoration preservation. Would love to see it real life someday. |
Thanks for the comments all.
Calexican I know which car your are talking about. I’d love to see that car in person, I wonder if it’s all original. Wish there were more pictures of it. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

That seems very near the “bar of soap” prototype color— love it! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Took the car to a local Christian cruise slash toy drive at a VW dealership. My car was the only Type 1 Ghia there, which is sort of sad given there were 50 Vintage VWs there.

Yep sad/surprising for California. I have to say if we attend any local VW or all makes shows we can get at least 3 Lowlights but all 3 were originally CA Ghias...maybe that explains it. |
Damn you Limeys!
Seriously though, I’m not shocked to not find any lowlights, but no Ghias was a bit surprising. Though even at larger shows I usually only see three or four and I’m talking amongst over 150 cars. I’m not sure if it’s because Ghia owners are not into the VW scene or there just aren’t that many running Ghias out there. Do you guys find the same issue in other parts of the world? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

You know I tend to steer clear of VW shows these days. Mostly because I think the KG is more appreciated at an all makes car show, where the vast majority know nothing about them, so they view them aesthetically. At a VW show the vast majority know nothing about them, but think they know everything, which blinds them to their major attribute, the very thing that makes the unique.
Our local club members have grown old together and have owned all types of aircooled VWs. Eventually they get to the KG later in life and their ultimate goal being a Lowlight. We have 3 Lowlights in the club and a couple more who would dearly love one. We know where best to find them, nowadays you have to find the money too. _________________ John.

The lowlights been laid up at the shop for a couple weeks for a transmission rebuild. Had a hard time getting it into fourth, Got it home today and needed to replace the new Wolfsburg West crap coupler with a good used one I found on the floor of my garage. Also needed to wash the shop grunge off of it. Shifts nice and looks sharp I think.

I can’t remember… did you put in a later transmission? I wound up doing that and am very happy I did. |

Yes I did. It came with a rebuilt split case but it had issues, we couldn’t find parts to repair it so I decided to use a tunnel trans geared to work better with the Okrasa engine. I can cruise at 65-70 at 3500 RPM. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Been using the car a lot since we got back from vacation in July, going to local shows, taking it to the shop, etc. car ate up two brake drums before we figured out the splines on the axles were too worn, so this week the transmission came out…for the fourth time…and good used axles were installed. No more clunking!
Took it to a local VW show Saturday and they put me in the cheap seats next to the sleazy bus crowd. I made sure to stay near the lowlight, you know bus people…
