As Nate would say, track time against a clock. Some place where you can find out how much fun you can really have, and scare the crap out of yourself...legally. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yup, time for either that 2270 you planned to build, or time to build a 2700 so you can go even bigger. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

whats the camber like in the front end, I am maxed out around 1.25 and it not only made the car handle significantly better in the curves but stabilized it at high speed... on the occasion that I may or may not have had the fasty around triple digits the car settled out super comfortably... made me wish i had another gear to grab... but i bet its a completely different story around 120 and have more power on tap. the only time my car feels twitchy is around 40mph...
Maybe time for a discreet chin spoiler under the front bumper.....
bigger engine like everyone is saying will likely make that trans more usable around town... but so will a ring and pinion..... anyway. again so stoked, look forward to more Clatter Fasty adventures |

Awesome
I had a 912 with that trans, big bore, 45 dellortos, etc, Was fun to hit 5th and wind it out but I was on 4.5's and 165's. Wide tires make a difference on a small no power steering car
I would try the grooved berg venturi's. I have heard they do wonders for low end with no sacrifice in top end, maybe even make more power up top. |

Hey Clatter cool to see you're driving this beast now, congrats mate.
I noticed you lamenting about not introducing caster when you had a chance to pie cut the frame head, anyhow, something i was told they used to do for circuit racing beetles back in the day is heat up the upper control arms red hot and bend them.inward. this would add camber and caster at the spindles. You could dial out the extra camber with the ball joint leaving you with caster. Don't ask me if it's safe, i have no idea. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

Greetings, gentlemen,
Thanks for the kind thoughts.
Been away from the site for a while due to trolls.
Not so much fun to come on here when my hackles are up.
This new world where any teenager in his bedroom gets to be a tough guy is kind of hard for this old ex-biker to deal with.
BITD, you didn't get to talk shit unless you got to talk shit, dig?
Anyways,
Been some great advances in Beetle stuff, modern electronics, and now a couple of transaxles.
Started to post up some detailed threads but have since decided against.
Best way to keep from getting pissed off is to just stay away.
Really sucks because so many of you guys have now become my best friends.
Now that the Beetle is back in action the black car is coming around.
The list goes like this:
Lift it up all around - now that the pics are taken, it's time to stop dragging bottom all the time!
Trim some more off the springplates to get rear toe-in perfect.
Chase weep on RR brake bleeder screw.
New smaller muffler.
Shitcan that crappy 050 distributor and stab a Mallory.
Install accelerator pump cams.
New floor carpet to replace the one i trimmed around the shifter wrong.
Get the fuel gauge working again.
Remove padding from front seat bottoms - they're way overstuffed.
Modify seat cams for more recline.
Modify seat tracks to get more rearward slide.
Glue in front and rear window seals to stop so damn much leaking!
Readjust door strikers.
Get all the gauge lights working again.
Glue down rear package tray carpet.
Tighten clutch adjustment.
Adjust R shift fork a bit deeper (you can do this thru a hatch on the 915 ).
Soften shocks 1/2 turn.
There's more.. But enough of a list already for now, eh?
I'm sure the ride height readjustment will take a couple tries no doubt.
We're at like, what, four times so far, right?
Really really wish i coulda hit the invasion,
And woulda made it even bottoming out the muffler and the wheel against my belly the whole way.
But, alas.. We get on a plane Sunday and that's life.
Somebody's gotta live it, right?
Love you guys, man.. *sniff* _________________ Bus Motor Build

Agreed. I remember when we only had the 2 monthly magazines for inspiration and tech articles. Now anybody with a keyboard can get the info (good or bad) that they need.
Don't let it get to you Steve. Most of us are jonesing for updates on your car. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

God I love how straight and gorgeous your Fasty is... you truly are an ar-teeeest, and on top of that you have a wealth of friends who were willing to help you get it there. there will always be somthing to tinker with... just the nature of these cars, I hope soon you'll be able to drive the living piss out of it.
I sound like an echo... every time i post about your car... but it really has to be said.. your fasty is the pinnacle of what a custom fastback should be. the custom touches you put on it.... its just right.
anyway brother... keep posting Fastback porn ... never get enough of your car and you let me drool on it in person... thats sayin somthing _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Yep the good old days. I miss going to the junk yard in the early 90's and having pick over so many ACVWs, so many. _________________

I don’t know shit. And I know it. Carry on Clatter. I’m well versed in the school of “Attitude adjustments” in real life. Keyboard assassin is the lowest form of douche.
You actually have friends from this forum. Some come over to your house and enjoy some fine grilling and sides. Maybe stay a night or two in your Hotel Westfalia. Miss you and J. Arrivederci!

Well, been a few since i posted...
The 'Ignore' feature here makes the place nicer to hang out.
Never used it before, but very useful!
Have a dozen or twenty full days working on the car and we'll try to get caught up.
While the car here has been depressing the rest of life couldn't be better!
My oldest kid passed the state beach lifeguard test and got a job.
He bought a new toy with his own money.
Not sure if any of you guys dig Ducatis, but check out all the mods to his Scrambler here.
Couldn't be more proud of my kid. Only 17 and a real job.
Next week he has to miss a day of school for helicopter rescue training.
I'm OK with that.
Car sat like this for weeks/months...
Adjusting spring plates on this setup is SO much harder than a stocker for several reasons.
Those 944 spring plate bushings SUCK to deal with and the e-brake cables run -thru- the trailing arms..
Luckily, my Man Jeff came and did some grunt work because i just can't do this again.
There was an oil leak at the front nosecone seal "solved"(?) by running the trans oil a bit lower.
Another oil leak somewhere i -hope- is the sump plate, but we'll see.
Shortened the one spring plate a bit more to get help alignment.
Allowed me to move a trailing arm pivot washer to the inside and get the alignment hopefully 100%.
Anyways, the car is out kinda in the weather and on stands and taking a time-out.
Chasing the SUCK out of it is going to take a long time..
