I recently picked up a 912 engine that is the perfect candidate for an easy refresh/rebuild.....as luck would have it, I have a '69 Single Cab in need of some extra power and a ready & willing engine bay.
I see quite a few conversions the other way, but can't seem to find any photos and/or insight on installing this 912 engine into the Bus.........I get it the tins are going to be an issue and I'll need to modify some type of 912 engine brace, but the Scab has plenty of space in that engine bay and it's not a concours build so wanted to see what TheSamba forum has to say....
Any help would be great !

912 motors tend to be stupid expensive to rebuild. $20K+ 10 years ago. Its why they are not usually seen going into VWs, and why T1s tend to be seen in 356/912 builds in the past before they became worth anything.

Yes, do it! Here's a 1960 panel I installed a 356 engine into. We've since changed engines, and converted to dual zenith carbs, but the engine will make it's way into another VW soon

I sold a ‘67 912 core this year of unknown condition for $2K. The crank turned, all I knew about it. IMHO that’s stupid expensive.

I’d sell that Porsche engine to a Porsche guy and then build a VW engine using a new case as well as other parts _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I dont believe this is the case. I own a 912 and I got a few quotes from some of the best rebuilders in the business this past summer for $8-9K. Expensive, yes....but not anywhere close to $20k. |

Had my 356 motor rebuilt by a professional shop, turn key, removed/ installed, all machine work, line bored, heads rebuilt and new high end crankshaft for right at $13.5 k.
Have about 10K miles on it, it’s perfect. |

You guys already know the difference in how a bus uses low end power and a Porsche uses high end power _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

If it was a late bay with a full Riviera camper I wouldn't want the Porsche engine in it. An early bay single cab is still pretty tin cannish, so pushing it around shouldn't be a big issue.
Depends on how you will use the truck. Big LTs tires, hauling heavy loads, or just cruising around enjoying the sound of a Porsche engine. |
