Got some spraying done today. Some small runs here and there but it's just first layer/epoxy primer. Letting everything bake out in nature's over. Gotta love Texas in late November. I think I'm going to put the doors and fenders on to start some body work.

It's Thanksgiving of course... and since this thing eats gas, not turkey, I decided to look at the tank. I really haven't looked at it since taking it out of the car. Trying to decide which route to go: replace or DIY redo.... (leaning towards the redo since it doesn't look bad)

The tank looks great actually. Happy Thanksgiving! |
Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to you! That's what I was thinking. Just a refinish inside and out. I'm trying to use as much of what is already there except for bushings, bearings, wires, etc |

Had a couple of hours before work tonight. Decided to start on the fuel tank instead of getting into something more involved. I'm thinking it was a replacement after finding "Autotank Do Brasil" stamped in the metal. Either way a fresh paint job won't hurt.

Got home around 0700 this morning and decided to get to work instead of sleeping. Trying to get some of the bodywork done before spraying the high build primer. Still haven't fully committed to painting it myself but more like 80/20 for.

Did the outer gas tank today. Sanded and then prep spray. What came off seemed like more of a coating of grease based finish. Primed and then covered with Eastwood extreme chassis black in satin. Overall pretty satisfied with the outcome.

Had a couple hours before work tonight. Trying to rework the areas where the PO had done away with the vents. Also got to shoot some of the actual paint for the car. Chose areas that won't be seen to test the paint on.

Getting bodywork done hopefully tomorrow. Then a wipe down before high build primer. Ordered a 12x12 canopy along with a lot of plastic sheeting. The plan is to make a paint booth in the garage and try to get this done.... |

Very nice progress. Every step gets closer to the finish.
(bad pun)
Just a thought ...
I painted my Ram truck Glacier Blue (L334) using DuPont Chromabase with 3coats under 4 coats of clear. It turned out to be a 20 footer. Good enuff cuz I was tired of the white.
Back in 2010 I built a spray booth in a garage using 1x2s cleats on the ceiling with plastic to the floor held down by 4x4s. I made a box to house a 20" fan with an ac filter in front & soffit vents in the plastic on the other side taped in place - the garage was a double car with walk door opposite of roll up door.
ANYWHO ... I draped a chain over the rear axle & bolted it to a rebar stake in the ground. This eliminated static electricity that I felt build up as I made preparations. I also wet the floor rite before spraying.
I had premeasured cups of paint, reducer, & activator so I could reload the gun inside the booth.
I found VERY LITTLE dust in the base & clear.
Best of luck ... stay safe.

@jinx758 thank you for the insight. I am definitely going to vent the "booth" with at least one box fan but most likely 2. Just have to pick up 1. Didn't really think of grounding before but sounds good.
Today I worked on the areas where the crescent shaped vents were because they are proving to be the most difficult part to get right, since they are gone. Other that that maybe a skim coat on the trunk lid near the apron. My hope is to be ready to prime, then wet sand in the booth before paint. We'll see how it goes. How she sits today...

I took pretty much everything down to metal then sprayed an epoxy primer over the whole thing. Heard it seals well that way. The paint I'm going to use is more of a single stage however, I'm going to mix in clear for the final two coats. Give it more depth.
Crescents are definitely tough. Not like you can just grab a block and sand 'er down flat. That would be too easy...... |

Small parts, small gun. Actually like the way it sprays better than the larger, more expensive one.

A 12x12 canopy is just short on the ends. Will probably add plastic drapes extended away from each end to give more room.

Fair warning... I got thrown out of my last neighborhood for shenanigans like this. Start looking now so you find the best outbuilding. Sell the missus on the kitchen, but buy it for the outbuilding. Best thing that ever happened. You'll see too.
Tip #27 - buy some time by confusing the building official with lines like this: "Sir, this is not a car. This is a historically significant Volkswagen." He will be back when the fog clears his head, but it buys about a week. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
