Like many, I'm giving up on the progressive carb for my buggy. Soots up the plugs after an hour or less. Got my heat riser tubes on last weekend, seemed to help in the running, but only richened it up more.
I will, as so many suggest, put a PICT 34 on which the prev owner took off. Question is.. will it be difficult to swap the empi-weber intake for one of these that are sold for about 89-$100 by everyone, that is suited for the PICT 34? I've had the carb off, just not the intake. The ones I am seeing look just like the Weber version I currently have except the carb mounting flange is different. Looks like the heat tubes would also line up the same.
Appears all I have to do is remove the carb, disconnect the heat tubes and boots to each intake runner and the intake would come off. Do the intake runners have to come off to slide the old intake out and put the new one in?
Suggestions please. And are these $179 Empi PICTS any good? I've seen cheaper ones for $79, and would assume those are junk. |

1. There is a bolt-on connection of the center part to the case, you'll find that.
2. I think you're going to have to loosen or remove the end castings from the cylinder heads, so you'll need a pair of gaskets for those. I happen to use metal gaskets there but some use the thick fibrous/cardboard type.
3. JIS (Japanese) nuts will have same thread (8.0mm x 1.25mm) but use a 12mm wrench, consider those or grind down a wrench if you need to. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I cannot vouch for the EMPI 34-3, but as far as other aftermarket carbs........
PO had replaced the SOLEX with an aftermarket 34-3 from PartsGeek (REPLACEMENT brand), but still couldn't get it to run quite right.
After I flushed the fuel lines, replaced old fuel hoses, thoroughly cleaning the aftermarket carb (crud in bowl from dirty fuel lines), and tuned the carb with a vacuum gauge and tach, I have had zero issues with the aftermarket carb, and still roll it.
The original SOLEX is still in the box waiting for a cleaning, as I suspect this may be all it needs.
The distributor you are running will definitely impact your carb choice, or vice-versa.
