I feel I’ve become good friends with Lisa Meier “theghiagirl”.
As we were exchanging info about Joan, Lisa pointed out a defect.
It seems a piece of the Karmann Ghia script was missing..
I have to chuckle because as I was discussing my home made “speed nuts” for the script Lisa pointed out the damage to the “G”.
I didn’t see it initially and had to compare it to Sophia’s.
Sure enough the Ghia part lost the “swish”.
These emblems are so delicate. It’s common for them break. Got a replacement installed.
In preparation for a potential concours show next June I also installed an upper pulley tin that had gone missing.
Little details make the difference 😎

Curious, why do I see some engine seals laying above the tin like this one, and others where the seal is under the tins? |
Good question. The seal in Sophia is totally different from Joan's. I am not really sure why. I wonder which one would be more "correct" for a 67

Seals changed at a certain point, I’m pretty sure 67 took the early flat style but not sure when the change occurred. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I believe that is the "only" seal available today. It is also I believe installed properly as it is an over and under seal, meaning it has two surfaces that look identical to go over the top and under the bottom. But boy, has that Ghia emblem sure changed.....the old looks MUCH better. |

Unfortunately the "old" one is damaged. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

Somewhere someone mentioned I needed to ditch the blue “screamer” coil. Not exactly sure why the blue one is referred to as a screamer.
Anyhow, a black coil with a proper bracket and logo looks more appealing IMO.
Now I have a spare😎

When you A/B it like that, the blue one looks really inappropriate.

Looks much better with the correct coil/bracket setup IMO. The Blue coils were called Screamers back in the day as you could buy a ignition setup with an 009, cool? Blue sparkplug wires and the ...Blue Screamer coil. It was required equipment in the 90s, most of the Screaming was the owner complaining that it actually ran better before the change. |

I have an affinity for blue as Sophia is painted a shade of the color.
It's interesting you mentioned blue wires.
In 2006 I thought Sophia had the coolest engine bay

Joan is going to experience winter again after many years living large on the west coast.
Going to slam her and install Earlies over the holiday!!
Not😜
Planning on doing some maintenance items.
Replace the Solex 34 PICT3 with the correct Solex PICT1
The seals for the front inner fender splash plates were never installed an earllier restoration. I have a set ready to go.
Transmission fluid change.
Full detail inside, outside and underside.
She will get the full spa treatment just like Sophia.
Not a lot to do as she is in terrific condition for getting ready to turn 55!

I’ve been spending some time learning all about “stock”.
What I’ve learned is that although Joan is nearly perfect there are just a few details I want to address over the winter.
I have a small oil leak. I believe it originates at the distributor. I pulled it finding a rock hard seal. While the distributor is out I’m planning to refresh it providing I can locate a rebuild kit that doesn’t cost both arms & legs.
A Solex 30 PICT-3 was installed in place of what should have been a Solex 30 PICT-1
Armed with this knowledge I started to search for the PICT-1.
I found a nice core to ship to Tim at Volksbitz. Seems he’s the Solex savant.
I wish I had talked to him before buying the core. Seems that there are different versions of the PICT-1 and the core I bought was wrong. I’m sending The wrong core and Joan’s PICT-3 for credit on a rebuilt unit from Tim.
The crank pulley didn’t look right to me but after some further investigation it’s the correct one for this motor.
I’m a bit into the rabbit hole now but it will give me something to tinker with over the winter.
I need to stay busy!

Just noticed the original VW stamped fuel pump, nice!
30 PICT 1 is considered THE best stock carb. Simple and bullet proof. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Thanks for that.
I am really hoping to refurbish the original distributor over the winter
It's the 113.905.205k
I have the correct replacement points & condenser.
My hang up is the Bosch rebuild kit
I believe the kit # is 1237010007
Must be rare or NLA as the couple I have found on the classifieds are north of $100.
I have already reached out to Glenn. No luck.
Any suggestions or leads would be appreciated _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

I found this really informative thread
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=606129&highlight=distributor+rebuild
After reading and studying the pics I felt confident I could disassemble the distributor.
My concern was not having washers & shims if mine were worn.
I was pleasantly surprised to find minimal wear. I did find old grease and grime internally.
I cleaned, polished & lubricated everything and reassembled.
No side play, no discernible end play.
New Bosch condenser, nos Bosch points and shaft seal were installed. Trying to keep a bit of patina on the parts.
Vacuum can works and holds vacuum. The advance plate moves much more smoothly. I did notice this distributor does not have a felt plug. Is it missing or does this model not need it?
The Rebuilt Solex should be arriving after the first of the year.
As I understand it Tim’s rebuilds look like jewelry 😎

Just received my very own lifetime supply of Bosch Distributor Grease.
I understand it’s pricey due to the addition of rendered Unicorn 🙄
Anyhow, I hope Joan appreciates the effort. I’ll share a bit with Sophia so she won’t feel left out.
