It’s off!

Malleted nylon scrapers under the fan until it popped.

So how can I paint it? Looks like it will be difficult to get off all the rust.
Get off what I can, Ospho the rest and spray paint a primer and a couple of coats of black?

I had mine ceramic coated. You've already seen it in the earlier photo. I did the tinwork in black ceramic coating. It comes out matt black very close to the original paint but doesn't stain and handles heat very well. Did the heater boxes too. Look in my gallery for those.

Looks very nice Nicholas— but you know where I’m going with this whole project. I think stock black paint would fit in perfectly!

It's going to be difficult to remove all the rust. Sand blasting is the only way I can think of to remove all the rust. Maybe, a local sand blasting shop in your neck of the woods?

That’s why I was thinking Ospho.
Perhaps investing in a little blasting equipment? There are definitely some tine pieces that could use it.

I guess it would depend on the cost of the equipment.

Whatever you do, the surface rust on the fan must be addressed.
We would all be mortified if a judge at a Concord de' Allegiance happens to spy that flaw with his mirror-on-a-stick and deducts points. Embarassed

I just received my welded fan today. Too many have disintegrated under higher RPMs. Probably not an issue on your engine but certainly a weak point in the overall engineering of the stock cooling fan.

Oh wow, now I see where it is weak!
Did they ever beef them up on later engines?

All of them have pressed tabs holding the vanes in place. I have never had one come apart but I have seen some of the guys that did and the damage that came in the mayhem of parts flying everywhere. Again, I am building a stout turbo engine that will accelerate RPM's very fast so I am taking all the precautions I can.

Let it sit in a bucket of white vinegar for a week, remove, rinse and brush the black residue off with a fine wire brush. If it needs more dunk it another week. GL

Yes, saw soaking might have good effect— bought some Evaporust. Let’s see what that does.
Thanks!

Muratic acid bath will take it off in seconds. It’s scary how fast it works, but the fumes are deadly and it will burn your skin and you have to neutralize, dry and paint before it begins to flash rust. I use it on gas tanks. Pool cleaners use it so it’s available at hardware stores.

Again, yikes!
Never realized the dangers posed by automotive repair before.
Let’s see how the more benign stuff works.

Still itchin’ to tidy up that oil cooler as well. Just a cursory wire brush and a light coat of spray black? Or are we in danger of clogging it up.
