As one of those naysayers I say to you congrats. I wasn't intending to be a naysayer, just was aware of how much work that bus needed to get back to the state it is in presently. Looks like you have done pretty much what I forecasted and then some! Most anything can be saved with enough $$$$$ I was simply offering my opinion that there were more cost effective westy projects out there.

Anyhow kudo's to you for saving a bus that some of us would have passed on. I am going to eat crow for lunch today! Smile

I don't think you were wrong in any way, really. I will definitely have more invested than I planned to have. But I guess it is all relative. I've seen so42's sell for crazy money, that still needed some of the work that I've had to do. In addition, those busses would still need paint, and that has by far been my biggest expense. So, I'm not sure I'm that much worse of than others who have restored a Westy.

I paid too much for the bus when I bought it considering the piece of crap that it actually was, but that left me in a position where if I didn't go forward I was already in the hole some money. Now, I'll still probably be in the hole, but I'll at least have a completely restored bus.

I also had to replace a rusted beam, then decided to do 944 brakes all around, got flipped spindles, which meant doing SAS in the rear. One thing has kind of led to the next. But, things are progressing just like I intended...which is that I knew this would be a long term project and I'd be buying what I can when I can afford it until it is all done. At this rate, it may still be a while.

Not yet. I will have a new workshop finished by spring. I've also dropped of the two core engines that came with the Westy with my engine builder. Once my shop has concrete and I can move in this will be my first project.

I feel bad I've let it sit for so long, but I pretty much have everything I need to reassemble, even though I know that will also be a long process. I just sort of ran out of space to work on it. It will get finished.

Not so fast. I'll never give up on it. Just pursuing options.

If my kids ever go to college or move out I'll have this thing done in under a week. Until then...who the hell knows. Very Happy

LOL. I'm not one to talk. I've had my latest project for a while (maybe since 2012?) and haven't made much progress on it. Other things just keep getting in the way. Kids being one, and the one in college is consuming all my available (and some future) income.

My latest issue is I need to fix my daily driver - a 2002 Audi S4 - that sent a deer flying last night.

Wow, it's amazing to read the comments in this thread when it was started 11 years ago and see how times have changed.

Lots of comments like: "that bus is not worth restoring," get a new shell to put the parts on," etc to seeing this bus SOLD for $42,000 recently.

front or back damage? if it is in the rear, maybe time to build a Smyth Ute? cheaper than fixing it, and you have somewhere to put your fresh kills.
