Looks like the first three pics, they have their sleepy eyes on.
They all have a sunroof? 16" rims? Semaphores? Wolfsburg era pressedbumper/barndoors? _________________ "OG = Original German" -- TheSamba.com dictionary |

Linked to the silver border/backing plate?
Doesn’t look a safe place to build, does it?
Quaint. 23w tossed to the side, and people sat at the cafe tables.
Now I know this is Grossglockner….but what area is it?
Like a secondary viewing area?
With the main viewing area being the large car park with the large hotel behind?

Nope....simply check the numbers, guys ! |
Hmmmm...
Most of them were registered in about the same number range:
S X2.5XX
Two of them were registered in Zell am See home to a famous family:
S 72.XXX
Is that the answer? Leet us know please. |

Right. very close !
These are all either 62.5XX or 72.5XX numbers. In these early days the number of cars in general was very limited and after WWII the Austrian government used a certain number code ( specified digits) f.e denoting certain districts, sometimes even high ranking politicians or diplomats, and the County of Salzburg had a code of 62.5ish and 72.5ish numbers for TAXI and TRAVEL business registered vehicles. This is not an assumption that I came up with, but is confirmed by a book from the early 1950s, that a friend of mine owns. It is much like an old telephone book, only that it lists license plate numbers and their registration owners and type of vehicle. I am not sure whether this was something to be used by police, insurance companies, or other organisations, but it definitely confirms why all of these DLX or microbuses that were registered to travel agencies in Salzburg (in the ca. mid-late 1950s) start their license plate numbers with either 62.500 or 72.500 !
( I am just guessing this is also true for the 52ish range and since the booklet dates from the early 1950s, may even transition into the 80.5xx or 90.5xx range later on)
Of course this is only a super nerd detail limited to only one of 9 major Austrian regions, but goes to show how much information can be lost and found in those vintage photos...
edit: Today our license plate numbers have a combination of numbers and letters, but the Taxi cars still carry a 'TX' for the last 2 numbers. So, this tradition is still somewhat alive. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

This was the best postcard I found today. It was mailed on 17th September 1952 so the samba has to be older than that. It is riding on a train with special cars to carry vehicles. |
