It’s interesting that the winner who backed out also happened to join BAT roughly at the same time as the auction and only bid on the Ghia toward the very end. Hmmmm |
Thats BAT in a nutshell! |

I can't argue. My spouse joined BAT near the end of the auction to buy our 67 Cabriolet.
Luckily I didnt get into a bidding war with her _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

Yes. Seller pays a percentage I believe. On BAT it’s only $100 to list, buyer pays the fees. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

The redeeming quality of BaT versus BJ is that people can chime in with questions. Granted, there's a LARGE peanut gallery of comments, BUT there are also pointed and important questions that the seller needs to address. It forces a degree of "candor" and transparency that you just don't get with the BJ and similar auctions with no discussions. As flawed as BaT might be, I prefer it FAR more that the BJ style auctions. Full disclosure, I bought two cars from BaT and NONE from any other auction site. Though, I must acknowledge that there are other auction sites that follow the BaT format. I just haven't bought anything from them. But BJ, Sotheby's, etc, format of auction doesn't appeal to me at all. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

A very nice Austin Healey fell in my lap last year and while it is a near concours car I have no desire to keep it so it will be in the RM Sotheby's Arizona auction later this month. I am pretty sure the cost structure between the auction houses is the same.
For some background I certainly could have done a BaT auction but since I know nothing about these cars I would be a dud as an engaged seller and I really don't want to stay glued to the computer for a week deflecting answers about a car I know nothing about. I have a friend at RM so I decided to go that route, but man is it expensive. First you pay a $1,000 marketing fee to get started. They send out a photographer to take pictures which are much nicer images than I could ever take. The listing with full description and pictures is put into a full color catalog that gets sent to thousands and thousands of their regular clients, same with their website. Here is the actual listing:
https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/az22/arizona/lots/r0046-1957-austin-healey-100-6-bn4/1196273
If you look at the pictures that's me driving it and yes I am that squashed and uncomfortable, nothing like the Ghia as far as roominess.
Then it will cost me $2,500 to have Reliable carriers pick it up later this week and take it to AZ and when it sells, RM Sotheby's gets 10%.
OUCH
But this was the Easy Button personified. I didn't have to do anything but make a few calls and since the car cost me very little to begin with I am fine with whatever the outcome. it could be plus/minus thousands vs BaT but the effort on my part was virtually zero and I am looking forward to the experience of auction day. No, I won't be there in person but I will be paying attention online that day. If anyone cares I'll post the results when it happens. _________________ Sebastian Gaeta

What a gorgeous Healy!
I understand your decision, especially if you don't feel familiar enough with it to adequately represent it.
There are a couple of BAT sellers who appear to broker exceptional autos. One that comes to mind is username 911r.
I wonder how much they charge for their services?
Good luck with the auction! _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

The best comment on that auction by far was by BAT user BigDaddyEureka just before the auction closed. Probably no one paid attention to it because it wasn't in English. Go back and look at it. I think that's because social media, and facebook especially, is the cesspool of collective human consciousness; where lies are truth, misinformation is reality, and actual knowledge is attacked in favor of uninformed opinions. It's best to just stay away from it. _________________ Currently own:

Ah, yes you have to keep it light, choose your friends carefully and eradicate any who exhibit the tell-tale signs. I've seen all the failings of course but don't get involved. For me Facebook is a haven of delight.

Yes, FB includes plenty of vile inhumanity.
But FB has let me discover the adventures of a boy and his dog exploring the beautiful Baddesley Common. Breathtaking photography.
Without it I would have never likely never had known about this corner of the world _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”
