Where did you buy that patch panel? Or is it a donar piece? Ive got a slightly larger section that needs help on my 65. So, different quarter panel.

Also, the car is coming along very nicely! Your welds are fantastic.

Yup, about $2000 to my door. Happily I was able to sell the half I didn't use so it was only $1000 for me.

What about a donor side from the classified section? That’s how I got several panels for the 54.

Agreed Jimbo - that is how I did mine! Just a lot of spot weld drilling but man did it fit like factory! Oh wait, it was factory... Smile

Just keeping things moving forward here. Pulled the nose cone off to replace 2 very worn out bushings. Thankfully a very straight forward task.

Bolted it back on with (hopefully) the correct thickness of gasket.

Now just a few hours more scrubbing and I think I can start reassembly.

Couple of hours work to get everything buttoned up.

But I wonder: How does one get the input shaft seal Out?

Great work! (Amazing transformation on that trans case!) Cool

As for the seal......they make tools that work well when shaft isn't in the way (basically just gaff hooking and pulling) but I've seen Cusser here show where he just screwed in 3 screws around the face of it so that he could just grab with pliers and pull until it came out. Dancing

Yeah you just put a couple of screws into the seal and pry it out

I already did that. I cut the heads off a couple of deck screws and screwed them in at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and tried pulling with a slide hammer and it just pulled the screws out. You can see the holes in this picture:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Idea #2 is to grind a couple of pieces of all-thread into hooks and fabricate a puller.

OTOH, a couple of things to be pleased about are that the input shaft is nice and tight and there is lots of oil in the transmission with no visible water. When I drained the engine I got about half and half oil and water so I am happy about the lack of water in the transmission. I have also seen transmissions with a lot of play at the input shaft indicating badly worn bearings, none of that here.

I have always just used a seal puller. Just do not damage the case!

Well, I ended up using the screw method and did a little damage to the case sadly. BUT! I know from my TR6 experience with the input shaft seal that a little silicone goes a long way to seal things up.

I ended up making a couple of attachments for my slide hammer, one to attach a vice grip and the other to attach a 12 x 1.5 mm bolt to pull brake drums.

Two things are up next: Clean and lubricate the pedal assembly and rebuild the rear brakes.

Another example of Farmer Brown's brazing technique. I wonder what the hell he was up to here?

I think I will look in the classifieds and see if I can come up with a better push rod.

WW sells that push rod new. I recommend getting a new one rather than used.
These are known to break and you do not know the history on a used push rod.

I am talking about the part with the male thread.

I have had two of these break in my history of owning beetles!

Thanks for that. The problem for me with WW is that they charge $40 USD for shipping plus I have to pay taxes and duty at this end so I could end up paying over $70 CDN just to get the part home. For about the same money I could buy this:

Oh wow. Too bad CIP does not sell that part. Those in the ad do look good.

There is risk in old cars for sure. Hope you get it sorted out and stay safe.

I decided to keep the original release bearing as it has lots of meat left on the bone.

One thing I noticed was that the bleed valve is on the bottom of the wheel cylinder. How is one supposed to get all the air out if the bleed valve is on the bottom?

Nice & clean! Good job!

As for the bleeder....in a pressurized system, I wouldn't worry too much about not getting all the air out but if you felt you wanted to be thorough, you could always jack up that corner of the car (or even maybe just the spring plate) to ensure that cylinder is above the level of the master cylinder.

Still though...probably not worth worrying about. I bleed a little excessively anyway. (Fortunately wife has no idea how many times a corner needs to be pumped anyway so I keep her in the dark) Wink
