ICLBWC is the most exclusive club.on the internet. lets leave it at that. i actually forget who is number 2
its mission is similar to that of the NAACP. its a couple people sitting around waiting for a white person to say something wrong. _________________ Extravagant Lifestyle

There seem to be ladders with VW HWE, and GHE stamped in them. Can you get a ladder with "Westfalia stamped on it" ?
|
Still no stamped "Westfalia" ladder, but neat to see literature showing the bar to attach the HWE ladder!!
Thanks for posting that!! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I have found this documentation, it is from summary of all Volkswagen Transporter Options including all special models like ambulances/high roofs any SO code. Printed August '66. It shows for the SO-42 there was an option to buy a ladder and support bar.
Point 2f says: Klappleiter mit Halterohr fur Dachgalerie, which means folding ladder with bar for rack mounting
Another interesting point, it seems even the roof rack cover was an official option, point 2e) Plane for Dachgepacktrager
I have seen one bill of sale in German, describing the extra items on top of the standard package, for an american export SO-42 where the ladder is paid for. 6. is the roof rack, 7. is the ladder
Then I am confused who built them. I have seen pictures of HWE and VW stamped ladders. They look identical, but sometimes you need to see all the details.
I know believe some ladders were either baywindow or meant for steel racks, others to combine with westfalia racks on split windows. Look at the difference in the legs here:
It seems like the bottom one will fit a split bus with Westfalia rack.
This is my van with my HWE ladder:
I might be mistaken but this is an HWE rack and it seems to me it would need the other foot position:
The cross member I have seen pictures of seemingly very original busses with very similar cross members, so I think they are genuine.
I have a suspicion that VW/Westfalia started to import HWE ladders to Europe (HWE ladders were designed for steel racks) and Westfalia mounted the crossmember on the Westfalia racks to be able to use them. Maybe at some point they even imitated the ladders?
I think these are westfalia mounted crossbars:
I have a HWE ladder and there is a HWE stamp in the inside. Like this:
But apparently there are VW stamped ladders as well, but stamped on the outside:
However this HWE is also stamped on the outside:
So I am pretty convinced you could order from Germany a ladder and crossmember for 48,- DM but I am not sure if the ladder was a HWE or VW / Westfalia produced item. Maybe some more people can share pictures |
