Finished adding dash cap to 1973 Super Beetle. The dash cap was bought from Mid America Motorworks. It is an EMPI product. I prepped the underside of dash cap with 150 grit sandpaper. then cleaned with 99 percent alcohol. same with old dash top of Beetle. I then used black Silicon Adhesive on underside of dash cap only on edges to make sure dash cap has flex in hot and cold weather, so it does not warp. I weighted it down and used bungee cords. then used pipe cut to length to push close the bottom part of dash cap. I waited over 24 hours for it to cure due to weather temp. Here are pictures of process. With a before and after here in this beginning post. I did not remove wind shield. Do not remove side vent tubes. the dash cap fits snug on them. I am pleased by the dash cap and how it fit snug. I did not need to use a heat gun or trim it anywhere to fit. just make sure you use a good bead of silicon adhesive on all edges.

My first car was a '73 Super Beetle and it had a deep crack right in the middle of the dash. Back then, there seemed to be little that could be done to fix it. I wish I had access to these dash caps back then, because they are great fixes to this common problem. My '74 SBSB has a dash cap, which looks great. You did a great job installing yours. |
