Thank you, and a (late) Merry Christmas!
She's home, at least partly: body and doors. The rest, later this week or next week. I already started today the pre-assembly: chased all threads. Let's see how it goes. Slowly, not to mess anything. It's vacation time and hot for this time of year (10 degrees Celsius), garage gets some extra heat.
I LOVE how this paint hue changes with light.

Things are happening quite fast! Today I had a wedding to attend . I am so amazed how everything lined up so well, all (large) bolts went right in. I still have to fiddle maybe 4 holes in the pans to get every small bolt in.
Kids approve!
And a peek preview of how the door panels fit. Beautiful work done by my wife.

Yep! Both of them are really excited to get the car finished.
Last activity for this year: polish ragtop rails and install it in (or on) the car. I cleaned, painted and greased the mechanism thoroughly.
I wish you all a Happy New Year! Health, peace and prosperity! _________________ '74 1303S, L98B Viperngrun (extra glitter), German Look

Happy new year! This year started with some good progress: sound proofing the rear with some 4mm thick plates, all the rest with 2mm, and I built up the doors. I started with the right one, all good but I forgot the window crank has to go in BEFORE the vent window. And I missed one old clip for scrapers, it was very hard to take it out while not disassembling everything and not scratching the paint and not damaging the chrome trim. But I did it. Then, on the left door, I figured that door channel on the upper side was smaller by 2mm and the trim could not go in AND have the clips... I guess the car was raised by the door some time in the past, so the door got slightly bent. Well, one piece of clean wood and a BFH and I modelled it back to shape.
Oh, and the door glass does not want to slide all the way up, it starts to drag very hard. I guess it is the new channel I installed in the vent window frame. The other channel feels soft and the glass seems to slide well in it alone. I don't know yet what I will do, maybe I will take out the old channels from a set of other vent window frames and test.
Also my wife sewed the headliner but I did not have the time to install it yet. I need to buy some more material for the pillars anyway... So next week.
And I got more parts from paint: hoods and hinges. I need to massage the hoods a bit, both seem to be too wide in the hinges areas. I guess just some pushing will get them to shape.

That color looks amazing. It was definitely worth all the time to get it right.

Nothing to update on the bug progress, it's too cold to glue the headliner.
BUT, this followed me home. 1000 miles round trip to get it. It was planned since years, now stars aligned. So now I combine the two things I like most in this hobby: my bug and camper. I did not want to buy a T2 or T3 Westfalia, because in that case we would have used that one for vacations. The plan was to drive the bug a lot.
Eriba Pan Familia from 1981, large enough for 2 adults and 2 kids, 550kg empty/690kg max. Now the wifey has a white canvas to work her magic. Let's see what will result in a few months. _________________ '74 1303S, L98B Viperngrun (extra glitter), German Look

Temperature went up, I'm back to work. We installed the headliner and now working on the glass. Rear window is on, it was not too hard. But I have big issues with the windshield. I have good wire, two extra pairs of hands, and it still doesn't go in. Somehow it sits too high, so I can not get the seal to catch the top body lip. Any advice? The chrome trim is on, we tried a bit also without it and still no success... _________________ '74 1303S, L98B Viperngrun (extra glitter), German Look

I guess nobody wants to speak to me unless I post pics. So here we go. Rear window on, popouts on, and a big plate of macaroni served.
For the windshield, I called for professional help, hopefully I can get an appointment this week.

I put all my windows in and it took 3 more people to hold the windshield in place before the seal would set in the correct place, and I have a 71 SB with a flat windshield. I found that using to much lube causes the rubber seal to move to much. |

I got lucky with mine. I set it in place and just had my son hold his hands on the glass with a little inward pressure, i used 6mm nylon rope overlapped by about a foot (about 1/3rd meter) with a thick wood dowel on each end as a handle. I lubed up the channel with Windex or something similar (might have been soapy water) and pulled the rope through. Got it in one go. I had to slap the corners with a flat open hand to get it fully seated, but once the inner flap of the seal was inside, all the way around, it stayed in place.

On the windshield installation: where did you start? top or bottom? I tried from the bottom.
Thank you, Victor! It was done by my wife. It stays pretty well, just a few and small wrinkles. However there are more on the front, due to shape, but they will be hidden by the sunvisors . _________________ '74 1303S, L98B Viperngrun (extra glitter), German Look

I started at the top. It made sense to have the top of the seal inside first, conceivably to prevent the top of the of the from being free to move in the event my son lost the pressure on the glass. But honestly, I don't recall giving it a huge amount of thought. Perhaps I watched a YouTube video and that's how the video maker did it.
Also, I should note I used Cali style rubber (i.e. no chrome trim) which may have made the process easier.
Best of luck

It makes sense. The lower "lip" of the seal is much harder to get in the right position due to the body shape in that area. So starting at the top would not allow the winshield to move out of position. I'll try that. _________________ '74 1303S, L98B Viperngrun (extra glitter), German Look
