something is off here. the bus clearly has a post 55 fresh air roof peak and the Fiat Seicento wasn't introduced before 1955 as well, so maybe the postcard was dated 1957 or rather 1962. Anyways, great old postcard !

Those are not ü dots , Chris. Up until ca 1960 the handwritten lower 'u' was written with an added line( rather a small bow) on top, which was a carryover from the prewar/war era Kurrentschrift font to tell apart the letters n, e and u which looked very much alike in Kurrent. so this reads Schuh. My father still writes all his 'u' that way to this day (as he learned it that way in elementary school).
interestingly enough it seems to read Schuh Wirtschaft, like Shoe business, probably hinting at the (national?)shoe production division /guild.

I just love all those minor details of that bygone era.
Would love to see more Swiss area pics.

A few of their directors off on a jolly to pimp some hiking boots? Smile

Yes, need some Swiss content. I’m not even familiar with their licence plates.
And what’s the Swiss equivalent of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?

I would rather say "Schulz", a common surname in Germany. It's the old way to handwrite the "z" in this way. And "Wirtschaft" in terms of pub...

you have a point there but I still don't think that reads Schulz. It should either read Schultz (tz) which it doesn't and the old font style of a 'z' nearly looks like a lower g, not like we are used to a z these days.
this is the old handwritten German Kleinbuchstabe z at the end of a handwritten word.

But we may never know until we find another pic of this 51 DLX. maybe it's Florian's? Very Happy

License plate shows the front bus is from Salzburg, Austria.
The typical advertisement of the area, says 'Glockner, 9h heute/today’
that is just short for 'Großglockner Hochalpenstrasse'. It's the highest altitude road of Austria and a 'must drive', now and then. quite infamous

i agree, this probably says Schulz. Schuh Wirtschaft is not something one would say, or write on the back of a bus.

Not exactly a tour bus, but from what I can fathom, the Swiss didn't use that many VW buses for tourism.

At the moment it looks that way, doesn’t it?

Neat background info on this picture from a Swiss friend:

Quote:
This is Wasen in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. The small church is very famous due to the fact that if you are travelling by train on the old St. Gotthard railway you pass it 3 times on several levels of height 🙂

nope. these are German post 55 plates. Swiss plates are indeed white with black digits, but the font is different and the rear plates have Swiss Kanton badges on them. The German TÜV sticker looks entirely different than the Swiss badges. I totally love the Swiss plates style, they are so classy !
