Anybody remember these - the jack brabham lukey muffler:
Don't know whether they were UK specific or available worldwide - question is what were they like? |

cheers John - a fellow vw friend managed to pick two of them up in a recent parts find, one of them is going on his beetle, the other (which isn't in the best of shape) we were looking to use as a template to copy it in stainless steel. |

some pics of mine (in as found condition)
i thought this must be a modification of the tuck away style, then i saw this advertised \/, now i am wondering if they were variations.

According to the flyers and adverts there was only the wrap around type
these could have been early Lukey muffles someone added
Very nice indeed |

I do remember the name Lukey from reading early VolksWorld magazines or even Foreign Car Guide from the 1960's though never saw one in person. Appears to be the first use of a "hide-away"/tuck-away muffler concept. Also, the left tailpipe seems to be non functional and was just included to fill the original left cutout in the Beetle's rear apron. Use of sliding pipes with clamps allowed a universal header for both the narrower 40 hp (34 ps) and later, wider 1300 cc engines. |

to try to sort this out i bought a 1969 pricelist.
as shown "Set40" is the "Brabham Lukey" extractors with tuckaway and therefore "Set50" being the normal single muffler as pictured further up in the thread (note how much cheaper it was also)
taking a wild stab in the dark, the twin muffler type could have been post 1969.
