Vinegar should be OK. You just have to wash out all the acid when done. Water will work especially if you use mild heat to help the liquid escape the crevices. The handle mechanism should be stuffed full of lithium grease. You can spray the whole thing with cavity wax to seal it up or use ACF-50 as I did. ACF-50 is used on aircraft engines and soaks in to the metal to create an oxygen barrier.

Thank you Nicholas. I appreciate your advice. I've never used ACF-50 but I will try it. _________________ Marc

Cleaning up and learning a lot about window regulators. Both of the ones that came with my car are replacements. One is a 6/71 which is after my car was built and the others is 5/68.
Before
After
Don't know why but I read that the spindle with the slot that holds the center of the spring was originally made of aluminum. I read that vinegar would not damage aluminum, but I have proof that it does.
If anyone needs to know how to break down a window regulator, just soak it in vinegar. I guess I let it soak too long. _________________ Marc

Marc,
The centre stud is available in steel from Airhead. The original piece often beaks or otherwise fails. Photos below from my car when I had to do the same fix.
I degreased the mechanism in kerosene and washed it down in detergent. Let it dry somewhere hot and the stuffed it with grease and cavity wax to seal it up.

Thank you Nicholas,
Yes, I did have your information from earlier. I will be getting a center stud and making the repair.
Any idea why the center studs were not steel to begin with?
I tried putting a spring on the left side regulator. Is there a trick to getting it back on? I tried to compress the spring, but failed to get it back on.
It only has to turn about 1/4 of turn but it's not as simply as it looks. _________________ Marc

I own a 1970 Ghia Coupe that I purchased (it was a 3 year old trade-in) off an L.A. area VW dealership way back in 1974. This 70 KG had no tow hooks either front or back. Should it have had tow hooks or was that an optional goodie? _________________ I'm looking for these license plate frames for my fleet:

Very good question. I've tried to find out what years had this rear tow hook but I can't say for sure other than I know 71 Ghias had them. They are very scarce and hard to find so I suspect they were not on many years. I think 1970 had them as well but don't quote me. It's hard to research since they are generally not visible. I don't think they were an option, but if they were, it would have been a dealer option and I've never seen them on Dealer Option Brochures.
Your 70 Ghia should have had a tow ring welded on the passenger side of the front beam. If the front beam has been replaced, that might explain it's absence. _________________ Marc

While my car was in the body shop, I bought parts that I would need to put it back together. One of these purchases was
clips and seals for installing the door panels. Since then, I've seen several doors that were still original, including another 71 Vert
that has never been taken apart and still all intact. Not once have I ever seen these seals on any doors.
I suspect Ghias did not use the seals, at least not on doors I've seen, which is 68 through 71. Can anyone tell me what's the
deal with these seals and why they are being sold by most vendors as fitting Ghias 1956-1974? Are they used on Beetles maybe?

I'm only referring to the rubber seals. all the doors I've seen use only the clips but no seals.
As far as how good the reproduction clips are, I have no idea, I have both originals and repros but have not installed any door panels yet. _________________ Marc

Come to think of it I’ve never seen the black rubber boots on a Ghia either. My doors I doubt were ever apart on the 62 and no boots. Beetles used them. I guess there is no harm in using them since both cars use the same clip. I guess Karmann felt they were unnecessary?
The original scissor clips are the best. Those ones pictured are too delicate and tend to snap off. Airhead used to sell the original style.
As for tow hooks I saw on another thread that the rear was a rare option. We have several 72-74 Ghias around the shop and some have loops welded on to the rear bumper brackets. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I've accumulated enough original clips now. I plan to only use originals. Makes sense that the rubber boots/seals are not for Ghias. Misleading advertising by the dealers if the car never had them out of the factory.
Yes, I've also seen the 72-74s with welded loops. Totally different set up. _________________ Marc

The Aussie Trimmer supplied the boots with his panels as well. My understanding is that you put them on the ends of the clips while fitting the panel to prevent scratching the paint. They clearly did not fit unless we were going to hammer the clip in! The clips themselves hold great! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Looks like Parts dealers are making extra money selling these clips to Ghia owners!
The holes on Beetle doors must be a larger size to accommodate the boots?? _________________ Marc

Time to get back to work. It's too soon to start it up but I pushed the car out of it's winter resting spot in the back of the garage back to it's summer parking spot so I could get back to work. I'm trying to figure out why the glove box door will not stay closed. When I got the car, I thought I had broken the metal piece that catches the glove box door button but it turns out the PO had epoxied that piece of metal over the original which was pushed up out of the way, and the epoxy had let go. This dash is transplanted from a 1962 and I see now that the PO installed a later locking button on the glove box door. This button is 1 5/8" inches long and that is too long for the metal catch on the 62 dash. So I'll be looking for an early non locking button.

The glove box door will be also a "problem". The locking button is not later but cabrio specific and if you want to put non locking button you need to swap the glove box door also, because the non locking button have a smaller diameter and need a smaller hole in the door. _________________ The glory never gets old, just need new paint.

Correct. I enlarged the hole on my glove box lid because it was a coupe's part being applied to a Cabriolet.
The "tounge" is PITA to adjust. I found it easies if it was adjusted from the trunk side without the box in place then carefully replacing the glove box so it didn't bend the tongue on the way back in. It wasn't too hard to get right.

Thank you both. Your comments are very helpful and saved me from ordering a wrong part. Now how do I determine if my 62 dash and/or glove box door are from a vert or a coupe? I don't see any part numbers on either, so is there a difference in the diameter of the door button? And what is the diameter difference, if there is one, in the hole on the glove box door? I recall reading somewhere that locking buttons were first used starting with a specific year but now I can't find that information. _________________ Marc
