TV movie "A Family Upside Down", 1978. Elderly married couple played by Helen Hayes and Fred Astaire walk across an intersection. An early Squareback drives by in background.
They're barely across the intersection when a late Squareback drives by in the near lane-
IMDB does not list the filming location, but in another scene it reminds me of Chatsworth in the northern San Fernando Valley in Southern California. |

Early Notchback on the Autobahn, German TV documentary from 1964 "Es geht ums Geld" (It's about money). Appears to be an "S" due to the chrome insert on the license plate housing. |

I haven't learned how to post pics yet, but Mix Tape (2021) on Netflix has a fair amount of footage of a beater late Square towards the end of the movie. Interior, engine noise, gear grinding too! Spoiler alert: A fully grown man is driving three teen girls to a bar to meet a rockstar. Sounds super sketchy if it was real life (papa bear Dad here), but fits in the context of the movie just fine. |

mcmat, the process for adding photos is explained here- https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6
I recently started using the "batch load" feature for loading more than 1 photo from a single episode to my gallery. After editing the photo for various details, I save it using a photo name with the show/movie title and episode in my computer drive; using a JPEG file type. When I'm ready to upload, I click on the "choose files" box, then do a search for one of the key words of the file name within the drive. At that point I select the ones I want to load from that episode.
You can find details on the episode such as the year, season & episode, the cast, etc. from IMDB.com. which makes it easier for others to find them on YouTube and do the VW spotting. |

One of the Godzilla movies VS. Mothra I think? Has a '60's fasty RHD with a full slider rag all the way to the decklid! Pretty cool! |
I just saw this today on Comet (free broadcast tv) It was Godzilla vs Megalon, and the yellow fasty played a good part, being in some hilarious chase scenes. There is also a dune buggy in the film which really surprised me but it was made in '76. It will be on again 1/30, if anyone is interested.

Movie "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (1984)- Capt. Kirk and Spock (William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy) are at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the San Francisco, California area after time-traveling back to the mid 1980's. Speaking with their whale scientist Gillian (Catherine Hicks), a beige late Fastback drives by in the background-

Orange late Squareback with front end damage, TV show "Charlie's Angels" season 3 episode 2 "Angel come home" 1978.
Late Squareback and 4 Beetles including an orange early Super, TV show "Kojak" "Money Back Guarantee" S3E12 1975. With the strong sunlight and large open-air parking lot, this appears to be a southern California inner city location instead of the usual New York City where Kojak has his police precinct office. Lt. Kojak and Detective Crocker (Kevin Dobson) are looking over the wall.
Early Squareback in gas station pit. German TV show "Der Kommissar", "Eine Kugel fuer den Kommissar" (a bullet for the commissioner) S2E10 1970. Show was based in Munich, Germany thus the "M" on the license plate.
Beige Fastback on Los Angeles, California freeway, TV show "Dragnet 1967" S1E12.

1977 TV show "Charlie's Angels" season 1, episode 22 named "The Blue Angels". Near the end of the episode, Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith) and the other Angels follow the antagonists to a junkyard. |
In the same episode, here with fellow Angel Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett)-
TV show "CHiPs" S4E1 "Go-kart Terror" 1980.
TV "NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie- The Snoop Sisters"- One of the rotating TV movies in this American TV channel/network in the early/mid 1970's. Starred Helen Hayes and Mildred Natwick as 2 sisters who write mysteries, taking place in New York City. Many VWs seen in background, etc. "Female Instinct" S1, the show's pilot episode from 1974.
The green/grey car to the right is an early 1960's Peugeot 403 sedan. The convertible version was Detective Columbo's car in that TV mystery movie series. |

Movie "Men at Work", 1990. Main character James St. James (Emilio Estevez) is driving the Ford pickup past a parked late Squareback-
TV show "Cannon", "Kelly's Song" season 4 episode 1, 1974.
Looks to be a red Notchback in the driveway, as Cannon drives past. His Lincoln has been tampered with so that the brakes don't work. "A well remembered terror", S3E14, 1973- |

"NASS"-submitted and other period travel videos from 1960's or '70's on YouTube showing typical traffic scenes. No narration in any, sometimes just the sounds of the traffic.
NASS video "1960's- San Francisco, Chicago, New Mexico". '70 Squareback in San Francisco:
Early Type 3 in New Mexico; Santa Fe IIRC.
"San Francisco 1970's"- Light blue late '60's Fastback:

Late light blue Squareback in background, (TV) NBC Mystery Movie "McCloud: The man with the golden hat" (1974) set in New York City. Dennis Weaver (Marshall Sam McCloud) in a taxi with beautiful episode guest star Jaclyn Smith.
Late Squareback parked, German TV crime drama series "Der Kommissar" episode "Tod im Transit" (death in transit). The series was filmed in the Munich, Germany area.
Type 3 police car; we don't see any more of the car in the episode to see what body style. I put it into Squareback category because the police would probably use this body as the most practical for carrying traffic enforcement supplies. "Der Kommissar", "Tod im Dornbusch" (death in the thorn bush).
Red late '60's Squareback parked, YouTube "San Diego California Harbor Drive 1970's".

A few more Type 3s in the TV mystery movie series "McCloud", this time in episode "The 42nd Street Cavalry" season 5, episode 4, 1975. McCloud is helping train new recruits on New York City's horse patrol.
Light blue late Squareback in traffic on Manhattan's FDR Drive northbound, with the United Nations building in background. This would be the East 48th Street on-ramp coming down between the 2 FDR directions.
Texas Yellow late Fastback:

Tan early (1966?- no headrests nor reverse lights) Squareback parked in background, "Bullitt" (1968) with Detective Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) as passenger in his girlfriend Cathy's (Jacqueline Bisset) Porsche 356C after Bullitt damages his '68 Mustang in the iconic car chase in San Francisco. If the roof is white two-toned, it'd be a 1500 S Variant from '64 or '65.
Movie "The Happy Ending" (1969). Filmed in Denver and Boulder, Colorado. Red late '60's Squareback, and...
Blue late '60's Squareback parked at airport terminal. Rear bumper already tilted downward from light rear tap despite car being only a year old at most. |
