After my heater core sprung a leak and I had to remove my dash to replace it. I decided it was time to upgrade the stereo head unit. I had an alpine single DIN in there for years and decided to make some modifications so I could install a double DIN head unit. The alpine iLX-W650 is very shallow so the fit only needed minor modification. More on that to follow. I have attached some pics of the process so far.
Note I had to repair a crack in the panel just above the ashtray. And I had to say goodby to the cigarette lighter. No loss in my option.
I cant speak more highly of the 3M plastic repair products. You do need the special caulking gun to use it.
Semi Rigid plastic repair 08235.
Super Fast Plastic repair 04274
I get this stuff from a local National Coatings supply and they loan me the caulking gun. It's very handy.

Looks very clean. Any mods yet on the back end?
Have you upgraded the speaks too?
Also, have to decided to put a mount for a smart (or droid) phone? I thought since you had the dash off, you could affix a solid mount point for a swivel phone mount.

Yes, I upgraded the front speakers long ago to a component speaker set. (Boston Acoustics SL60) and the rear 4x6 also Boston Acoustics. I added an 8" JL audio sub under the back bench seat and i will be adding a 6" mid base woofer in a custom center console in the front to add a little mid kick.. This is all run off two small 4 channel amplifiers. _________________ 1995 EVC |

Very nice work. Do you plan on adding a backup camera as well? I saw some slick ones on eBay that replace the license plate light and integrate a camera as well. |

Nice! I plan to replace with a Sony single-DIN unit that has a large floating touch display unit out front of it.
Now that the electrical issues with the 03 EV have been sorted out! Stay tuned! |
