Anyone know the size of the bolts and nuts for the muffler bracket and muffler strap on a 1.9? I've got to do the job on both my Vanagons and I'd like to have the hardware ready when I remove/cut off the very rusty ones in place now.

Thanks,Ed

Thanks for that reminder. I hadn't used Vagcat in a while, and I just signed up again last week. Some of the pictures are a little blurry, but it's still helpful.

While that GoWesty diagram is helpful for most of the bolts and studs, it leaves out the location I was looking for- the bolts on either end of the muffler strap.

This is obviously for future generations, but I had the same question about bold sizes.
So here is what I'm using to replace the Cat, the Muffler, and the Tail pipe on my '84 Vanagon Camper Auto:

1. Muffler, cat, bolts:
(3 x 8m 1.25mm x40mm + nuts/washers)
(3 x 8m 1.25mm x30mm +nuts/washers)
I believe the difference in length is that some of the bolts also connect to the cross bars supporting the muffler/cat.

2. Tail pipe - these thread directly into the muffler (3 x 8m 1.25 x20mm - no nuts/washers)

Note: I bought "flanged" bolts. Not sure if that matters.

I have no idea why the length of these bolts are slightly different than those proscribed in GoWesty's pdf.

Also, I wasn't able to get copper nuts, so just went with what Advance Auto had in stock.

Hope this is helpful.

If you dismantle a VW engine and reassemble it enough times, will you end up with enough extra parts for another engine?
