Hey all, I've been having an issue with my 1979 bay for the last few days.

It starts up fine, but idles louder than normal with occasional grinding noises. After about 5-10 minutes it quiets down and the grinding stops. I haven't looked too closely yet, but I thought I'd get an idea of what to look at here. It seems to drive fine once it's going. I also recently had to replace my rear wheel bearings, is it possible something got messed up when I did that? Or is this just a seasonal thing and that's all a normal reaction to the cold until it warms up?

Thanks in advance, y'all are always super helpful and I learn a lot every time I make a post here.

if the rear wheel bearings were changed, the rear brake shoes do get adjusted as far as their distance to the drums. Tighter is better, looser can lead to ..... grinding / scraping sounds.
Next on the list would be a throw out bearing in the trans announcing it's time is at an end.

Saying it happens at idle implies it happens when the van is not moving, yet other things in your post implies it happens while the van is moving. Which is it?

If it happens when you first start moving on a cold day it could be the speedo cable or some other cold noise.

If it grinds or whines when the bus is not moving and with the clutch disengaged (foot on the clutch pedal), and the pitch is correlated to RPM, it could be the throwout bearing.

It happens when the bus isn't moving. Once It it, I don't notice any issues with how it handles, but the grinding happens when it's not moving yet.

Yeah, after reading up on that a bit more, that sounds like my problem.
