I'm about to start patching cut-out rust areas. I need to find a way to rust treat the unreachable back sides of these pieces. These are my main areas of concern.
In each case there will be some area that cannot be reached to rust treat after the pieces are welded in. I'm a big Ospho fan and I plan to spray into all the rocker channels followed by sticky bar oil after the painting is done.
I know about weld-through primer but I also know that you can't really weld through it. I'm also a big MasterSeries fan and I plan to use it on the floor portions.
The last two of the hatch sides I'm unclear how to proceed.
Just need a little direction. Most of the exterior finish is now removed but I had to leave it out in rain for a few days while I worked on the shop.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've actually done quite a bit of patching on other vehicles on which I could reach both sides. If life didn't get in the way, everything would be done by now, huh? _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

I would brush on master series silver or black on the chassis and inner fenders. Wire wheel a section and get it painted and patched! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Welding destroys any paint be it MS, POR or weld through primer.
Once you do all you can to treat and paint the rust and weld HAZ, spray on lanolin. It creeps into crevices and keeps the rust at bay.
Don't believe me? Just google it. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

Why can't you weld through the welding primer? I do it all of the time. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

The good copper colored weld primer by Upol is EXCELLENT. And for the blind channels, I like this stuff
https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-internal-frame-coating-14oz-aerosol.html
If you've never looked into cavity wax, thats another good treatment for inside corners and seams. _________________ modok wrote:

Yes copper weld primer is my choice too. I use SEM but have had fantastic results from other UPol products. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Esde- how many cans of the Eastwood stuff does it take for the rocker channels?
67ctbug- I understand that you can weld through the primer but any rust prevention or priming on the welds must be lost in the process. No?
Thank you both. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

No, the whole point is it melts around the weld. A little may burn off, but having anything is better than bare steel on bare steel. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Ospho only attacks the very top layer of rust. A better product are the jelly based rust removers that sit and soak in a bit more. Rustoleum sells a very good product but even then to get the rust out of pitted metal takes multiple applications and abrasive removal to get down to the bottom layers. It’s a PITA. I spent a full week on Ghia doors, five applications with heavy pitting until I finally hit shiny metal at the bottom of the pits.
In blind cavities you remove what you can get to and then spray in Waxyoyl or some other such stuff to try and encapsulate and keep moisture out. The best thing to do after that is keep it out of the wet and humid environment which will soon activate and rust you miss, which on a rusty bus will be lots of spots. _________________ Go Reds! I would say Lanolin spray as well. Easy to get and apply.
Here is a WD40 version video of it.

Or this. You can get it off Amazon. Lasts for 2 years.

You might get away with one can. I used 2 on my last bus project and got inside every tube, rocker and channel. _________________ modok wrote:

I’m also concerned about how to kill the rust in the body seams. I’ve seen too many nice paint jobs then start blooming from the seams in a year or two. Some claim that Ospho will soak into the seams. I have done no experiments to test the theory. I’ve seen quite a bit of claims and theories including here, concerning phosphorus compounds but none that I consider definitive. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red
