Haven’t put that much pressure on any of them yet. I am hopeful that it will but it remains to be seen. |
If it doesn’t torque down then you’ll need an insert. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Happy there is something to need if there’s a problem. Thought perhaps is might’ve been time for the crusher. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Well, all plugs torqued to 22 (the lowest in the acceptable range), so it looks like we have threads people! Unless there is some terrible payment down the line, it seems prudent to keep torque on the low end given the age of the engine. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

So I assume the little lights in the headlights come on with the parking lights?
Wait, I see by the manual that those little lights ARE the parking lights. The lights below the headlights are only directional lights. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

So the crank pulley nut is bigger than anything we’ve got. I measured it at 30mm and duly purchased a 30mm wrench. So why is it not a perfect fit— a bit loose? _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Looks like we should get a shallow socket— how else can we torque it back on? _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Wait, I see by the manual that those little lights ARE the parking lights. The lights below the headlights are only directional lights. |
The marker lights are part of the headlight assembly for the Euro set up. For the North American set up, the markers are part of the blinker assembly. This stems back to the days when the lenses were clear glass and white light was fine for the function. Amber light is mandated these days. You can determine which blinker is installed by looking for the number of filaments. Double filaments for North America and single for Euro ( obviously since the marker lights in the Headlamp).
If you have the wiring loom set for North America you might have to relocate the marker wire from the blinker to the headlight. It's not a difficult task, just fiddly. You can still use the double filament bulb in the blinker. I jumpered both filaments so they work together as blinkers, even though I have a NOS set of Euro blinkers I haven't swapped them in as yet. The bulbs are not interchangeable. Dual filaments bulbs have two contacts and staggered bayonet studs although I have seen instances where people have jammed them in.
I hope that provided some illumination on the topic for you.

Proper torque is a good thing but in this case The bolt can be confidently tightened with an adjustable. No need for a torque measurement. The pulley is keyed and it’s a snug fit to the crankshaft. If that bolt is firmly tightened the bolt and pulley will stay in place. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

Ha! Illuminating yes! But so dense as to dazzle. Gonna have to spend some time to parse all this and make a plan.
Fun!

To those who have ordered Karmann Ghia Fever T’s— I have extended the closing date by a week so orders will be shipping a week later than they would have. Just posted on a facebook page to see if we can drum up a few more sales.
As they seem to always say whether you like it or not: Thanks for your understanding!

Got the wheel back on (as the starter is in), put it back on all fours and in fourth with the e-brake on:
Loosened frightfully easily. I think I could have used a pair of pliers.
Sheesh.
Awaiting the puller.
Picking up NOS manifold on Tuesday.
Someday our car will run. (Sung to the tune of “Someday my prince will come”) _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

I think you have the wrong crankshaft pulley it looks like a later style.
Here is a pic of the two most common 36 hp style. One is thin lip one fat.

This sounds authoritative:
3foldfolly wrote: |
All 36 hp pulleys had an offset of 7/32nds" from the nose of the hub to the back lip of the pulley. Diameter was 7-3/16" from the beginning of 54 through the 59 model year. The diameter was reduced at the beginning of the 1960 model year to 6-63/64". The offset was changed with the introduction of the 40 hp to 23/64". So three 36hp pulleys: 54-55 with larger diameter and non-rolled edge, 56-59 with larger diameter and rolled edge and 1960 smaller diameter with rolled edge. |
