Looking for some examples of exhaust for the Ghia - whats everyone running - can I see the setup! All the single outlets i see in the middle seem to really stick out a lot or straight piped - how loud is this without a muffler?

Nice - was you able to keep your heater with that setup? _________________ @gostlrs on Instagram & Youtube

Old school Dynomax turbo muffler. 1 5/8" merge to stinger to muffler. Inlet and outlet on the same side of muffler. Great sound.

A single stinger exhaust is awfully loud. If you like loud that would be among the loudest.
As far as a good looking single pipe. The Sebring is sexy IMO

A major consideration for the exhaust style would be the size of the pipes, dictated by the size of the valves in the cylinder heads. A stock engine such as in your '72, or one with mild modifications such as dual carbs yet having stock-valve heads can use a header with 1 3/8" pipes. Or a Vintage Speed or "Abarth" 4-pipe style with similarly sized inlet pipes (Mr.Okrasa gallery).
2-outlet exhausts would be like the one Glenn showed, or a Tri-Mil like this one-
My friend Bill in Connecticut had a lovely '68 Coupe with a 2-liter Type 1 engine with larger valves over 20 years ago. His exhaust was a larger-pipe one similar to that of overboost's, but with aluminized header and large stainless muffler. IMO this single-outlet muffler does "show your hand" as to a larger exhaust because so much of the exhaust "junk" is seen from behind under the rear apron. He also fitted a dual quiet pack muffler on this same header, which were also aluminized. With that system there really was a lot of "junk" visually under the bumper. Overboost's choice of making his system flat black to visually hide it helps in this respect.
I think at the moment, and for the past few decades, all 1 3/8" headers for Type 1 engines are a universal design of the header for Beetle, Bus and Ghia. On a Ghia, the lower 2 pipes, the header flange, and the muffler hang down quite a bit so that those parts are really visible. They are more hidden on a Beetle due to the apron extending down slightly farther. Gene Berg and others used to offer 1 3/8" headers for buses and Ghias up through the early 1990's in which the lower 2 pipes/flange/muffler were raised up about 2" for ground clearance, which also reduced the visual "down-hang". System was made either by the companies S&S, Fourtuned, or Thunderbird. I have such a Berg header on my Ghia, which I installed after I got fed up with the tinny and loud sound of the Tri-Mil in my photo above. Unfortunately this style header is only available now used in the Classifieds. This engine is a near-stock 1600 with dual-throat Weber 40 IDF carbs, which runs very well.
I've also seen somebody here on theSamba using a Beetle-style 1 3/8" header with "hide-away" muffler off to the right which was modified for his Ghia. Here's such a system on a '68 (c21darrel)-
I would be quite interested in the appearance of the Sebring style exhaust shown above on a Ghia, if the header and 2 mufflers would be coated either in flat black, or flat grey so that only the pipe coming straight back remains chromed/stainless.
With no rear bumper on your '72 to provide a visual "distraction" from the exhaust system, I recommend getting a system that hides its presence via a dark color rather than being bright and shiny. |

Really solid advice here Rome about not making the rear of the KG design all about the exhaust system.
Although my new engine is still in build (turbo, no muffler) this is what I have for my current NA engine. Barely noticeable except for the 2" collector u-bend headed underneath.

Some interesting setups - thanks everyone - I think I'll keep it with the dual tip - seems to be the best low friendly setup that keeps a muffler of sorts _________________ @gostlrs on Instagram & Youtube

Sorry, not very good photos of my dual tip exhaust. Maybe you get the idea. I'm surprised how good they sound

runamoc, I remembered your type of exhaust when preparing my response above but did not find a suitable photo. Your style works very well visually because the exhaust tips are distanced far apart, and the "T" pipes coming out from the center flange at the header connection don't come rearward far at all.
Off topic, but those slender bumpers and the wide wheels help alot to take away the "bulky" look of the original bumpers on the late-generation Ghias. Are those early Type 3 blades or aftermarket fiberglass ones? |

with homemade brackets. IMO getting rid of the stock '72 turn signals and the fiberglass bumper 'cleaned' up the front end

I don't have any straight on the rear photos but here is my dual set-up. No idea what type/make they are, no true muffler, only a small baffle in each pipe, quite loud.

S&S used to make that last one. The last ref car picture is not a merged header, just a standard 4 into 1 _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

How does the fan shroud do on a long highway drive?
All the ones i've seen have no internal vanes and the 3/4 side runs hot. _________________ Glenn
