One other aspect I find interesting about all this is how vibrant places like Grossglockner seem to have been so soon after WWll. |
looking at german tour bus operator's sites they seem to have started to get back up and running by 1948/49. I can imagine people were desperate to head for the scenic mountains and clean air after years of war and living amid rubble, so the demand would be there. _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

Yes, I get that. Similar to how it will it be when the Covid situation fades 🤞
Nice clip!

The name of the gentleman in this picture is Rudi Friehs. Rudi started his small Austrian Alpine taxi business with the Alpine Express bus. As his business grew, further T1 & T2 buses joined his fleet. Rudi also added some trucks for milk transport.
This is Rudi pictured in recent years - still into cars. Rudi died around 3 weeks ago, aged 90. There is around 65/70 years between the two pictures. What a shame not to get his input…

Judging by their hats they may be Austrian Army personnel, probably sitting in the back of an army truck. One is wearing his 'Gletscherbrille'. Sunglasses for snowshoeing or skiing on the glacier.
The lady in the checkered pullover wears leather skiing boots, that might be mistaken for normal hiking shoes. Those were pretty similar in how they laced up above the ankle, but skiing shoes have metal plates in front where they go into the ski bindings. I have several pairs of old skis and vintage 1950s shoes and clothing and it is not easy to ski with that equipment. those shoes offer much less ski control than nowadays hard plastic boots.
It appears that the Barndoor Micro has a wooden roof rack to which the megaphone is attached. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

There is something about non- turn signal buses that is so insane. So pure, so clean, classy, absolutely gorgeous.
Here's Peters DLX again, pic from the official Bullitreffen Kals site.
With all this Glockner talk I have decided that this year's summer trip will be to the summit. No matter whether or not an official Treffen will or can be held.
Unfortunately no bus finished to make the trip but some of my other rides will have to do. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

copied from the logoed bus thread.
It couldn't be any better fitting this topic here, since it's literally part of the way and sound and lifestyle of the 1950s/1960s era and Alpine areas and buses we are talking about here. please excuse my nerdiness.

This, my dear yodeling friend, is one of the most popular Austrian Volksmusik bands of the 1950s and 1960s. Die Kern Buam ( The Kern Boys/Brothers). ( the guys in and around the bus, not the Tyrolean Lederhosen guy and his female singer partner). The Guy behind the bus is Fritz Edtmeier who was their MC and joke teller. A group from southern Austria, Styria, they brought traditional Austrian folk music to the new era of popular music and record business after WWII. They were literally International Stars in the German speaking community. Unfortunately they have all passed away since, but the group leader Sepp Kern's restaurant/hotel is less than a mile down the road from my place and still operating as a family business today.
Check out them Polydor bus hoodlums in action.

that is what i like about the semaphore buses. just not a fan of blinkers.
maybe because my first car was a semaphore beetle? It was not easy in the 80s to get a VW through TUV with functioning semaphores.
They could scare unsuspecting pedestrians or cyclists, even injure them...
people won't know what they are and be distracted....
people will not know that you are wanting to make a turn...
i was just as stubborn as they were.... _________________ regards

Will do, but it will most likely be a more spontaneous decision, according to weather and spare time probably in July or August. Glockner is approx 200 miles from my place, so could be a nice one day trip, but I have friends in Carinthia, that I plan to visit and spend time with, so it'll only be a 1-1/2 hours trip from their place to the Hochalpenstrasse toll gate. So we can take our time and enjoy the summit and getting there. Also the weather (of course on 8.000+ ft elevation) can be quite harsh anytime during summer. I know it must be difficult that if you have to plan a long distance trip from abroad. You never know what the weather will be like in the Alpine region.
