They sell to real people at these prices all the time, the asks On Samba are inflated 50-100%

I'm very curious about this. Are you able to keep track of actual sell prices?
I would have guessed sellers would get at least 90% of asking. I can't imagine asking $30K for something and accepting $15k.

i have seen quite a few westy's being listed at "reasonable" prices but i can assure you....they all need an additional 5-10k thrown at them to bring them up to snuff

There’s a lot on my local Craigslist for $15-25k, they also don’t seem to be selling.

I wouldn't put too much weight on one example that may or may not be a good deal.

It has been hit on one corner and not repaired. The mileage is about 200,000 so even if the 2.1 engine exhibits no issues its days may be numbered.

Like the one below it on that page (and perhaps many Canadian Westies) it does not have air conditioning. Doesn't matter to some buyers but is a non-starter in my part of the world. I'll rashly predict that the lack of AC (&/or the cost to install or repair it) will become a major price factor in years to come. These things aren't eye-candy -- they have to deliver a practical, enjoyable driving experience.

Yeah I don't think this is true. Maybe on vans listed in the $60K+ range.

You get what you pay for in many cases. Unmolested, rust-free, good paint, well maintained, etc. will cost you. Anything under $30K usually needs work or is compromised in some way.

Side note - I am amazed at some of the samba sellers asking premium prices that didn't take time to vacuum the carpets.

This

Vacuuming the carpets and getting the dust, debris, spare change, toothpicks and pubes out of the vents adds about $1k to the value.
