One of those days that went totally sideways except near the end.

This is not a direct update on Ruby, rather indirect. See, I wanted to experiment and see if Ruby's left pan holes could be filled with weld, as I am not going to buy an entire left replacement only to use a short portion. So, insted of botching Ruby's pan, tried it on the Squareback first. Went really well, got about half dozen done including filling about a 2,5cm by about 4cm hole with weld, no warping. We don't no patch. Razz Laughing

I will look into finding a source for MIG gas, this flux is annoying...

Last few mornings have not worked as planned, so been working until time to go horizonal, leaving insignificant time to update. I will do so shortly, though if don't mind, can someone help by answering a question?

How proud should the stock insulation sit?

Can it be heated and rolled? Or better to trim?

Take note, already glued, never used this type of contact cement and seems stickier than what I have from Dad, plus being a spray rather than a liquid, no ability to wiggle.

Over six hours to upload the photographs... Man, I miss my Macintosh, though at least have any computer! Razz

Anyway, Wednesday, ceramic thermal paint went on.

Wasn't initially going to do the doors, however, found not only does it make a noticeable thermal difference, does have a slight impact on the sound expression of the panel which is coated.

Find interesting all these factory markings, do wonder what for, especially the one on top of another.

Dad had the door's window seals replaced and there was a gap between the vertical and the seal, so when Dad go through the carwash he put his finger over to keep the water out. Laughing My take is now they were a lazy shop, as instead of fishing out the bolt and the two washers from inside the door, replaced the bolt and one washer. Rolling Eyes

Only going to add some insulation, mostly for heat. First is mostly for heat, second layer is for sound and some give under the carpet.

Then onto gluing the original sound deadening back in, as already have seen.

My dear friend in Oregon had the idea to build up with insulation under the window to resolve how the stock sound deadening was sitting. Carefully removed the headlining thinking put back, turns out no padding under, jut a piece of scrap vinyl glued to the backside. Shocked Rolling Eyes Since putting on insulation, went ahead and put one coat of the ceramic thermal paint.

Good thing as found the ceramic thermal paint was going stiff, turns out the lid is rubbish and doesn't seal. I am not about to let all that money go to waste, can't put it on the floor, so down came the headliner. I will say, this has to be the worse automotive restoration task ever, gets in every crevice, up your nose, and in your mouth. So puppy only got t help with each door trim.

Seems another example of the shoddy work, super thin insulation barely tacked to the roof and only a narrow strip.

Scrapped down.

First coat of ceramic thermal paint applied.

Vinyl headlining samples came today! Dancing I am loving this light tan with the brown of the seat upholstery and carpet.

Thank you for the complement on the progress and on pupper. Very Happy

I am also interested. I don't have a datalogger or the thermal wire, though do have an IR thermometer and a multimeter with temperature, though.

No comment on the headlining?

I got some things done Sunday, too tired that night to post, then felt like why bother when isn't read much and only one or two respond?

Instead, will just condense and say got most of the insulation done, including deciding to do the back part of the roof because where the dogs are going to be using scraps. Made a mess because despite all the effort not to put in reversed, seemed I did.

Hastily, did a test also on Sunday, 76*F ambient, where the sun was hitting the roof was 121.4*F, though on the inside the ceramic thermal paint meant 104.4*F. Not sure how much the stock padding affect the radiant heat onto the occupants.

The gallery has pictures if so inclined.

I been not working on Ruby, partly trying to make a new financial plan (so grateful to have my cousin's help, born four days before Dad) and partly as tried to sew up a pair of bespoke trousers (I drafted and fitted the pattern myself).

This morning the code violation officer stopped by again, now requiring any vehicles visible from the street (screening is not allowed) to be titled, registered, insured, and drivable. At least know this time can't simply look drivable.

Got my act together and ordered what should suffice to get Ruby on the road. Chickensoup, my turn to over order a part. Razz I swear clicked once and did check the cart four times before placing the order. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Supposedly, the parts be here Monday. Shocked Very Happy

While had my wiring tool kit (everything related to wiring is in a vintage tool box) out for working on Baby, figured high time to take care of the broken connector for the plate lamp. Came apart when I removed the decklid in the very beginning of this saga.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Certainly not the first time and not sure why a new spade was put on, since a new wire seal was not installed no the plate light housing removed when the terrible respray was done.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So, replaced the wire and this time put in spade connectors so could be easily disconnected and the decklid removed.

I didn't think to get a new wiring seal and since when she does get repainted she will get a new wiring harness, used silicone sealing adhesive and shrink tubing. Give it a day to cure.

I had the same issue too. I almost think it just sticks on the front of the transmission and when the transmission is pushed in place, that is what seals it.

My friend is better than I, found this: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4529971. In short, the seal goes on the transmission first and then squishes onto the body.

Interesting has a VW and Audi symbols when in a Wolfsburg West package.

Immediately went out and installed the seal and the other rubber (too tired to recall the name...). Transmission mount was this morning.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I was going to put the transaxle into the cradle when remembered it e easier to do the welding with it out and then hit me what errand I forgot to do earlier this week: get MIG gas and wire. Only took about an hour and a half... So looking forward to being able to drive Ruby!

After that, gave Baby some attention, can't have the ladies getting jealous. Razz Laughing

Addendum
I had help all day today. Slightly more difficult changing spark plugs working around dog legs. Laughing

If anyone happens to come across this and has help to give, it be appreciated.

New to welding and even newer to patching, so my confidence this is enough overlap is non existent.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Further, second guessing and thinking should use the 1mm thick roof metal to patch it, rather than the about 0,5mm donor fender (I saved scraps of a classic Mercedes the lower half was far too gone to save, rather than buy new of unknown quality).

What is the picture looking at? Make sure the metal around the hole is thick enough to weld to. I think that piece should be big enough.
