Long awaited first update for 2022 has just come in from the Team. Work has started on the left side headlight. As with the rest of the car, the left side is being finished first and if everything looks right, the other side will be duplicated. They started with the correct pattern Bosch headlight. These lights were used un numerous German vehicles at the time and were also supplied in different diameters to the Daimler Benz built VW prototypes between 1935 and 1937.

At this point it looks kind of brutal as the indentation for the headlight is being hammered directly into the front fender.

The back side of the headlight bucket gets formed separately and will be welded into the previously shaped opening.

The construction of the W30 headlight is a combination of a headlight bucket that is a part of the fender and a separate fairing that is welded to the fender from the outside.

Some more random photos, some going back a little in time when the guys trimmed the rear left fender. Other photos are of the engine bay and the trunk area metalwork.

quite amazing to think they knocked a whole bunch of these out in short order back in the day. I am sure it got easier after the first one was done and finalized but still a lot of work. _________________ regards

I can't believe the effort to make the front light housing, looks amazing, but no wonder it got changed later on in the design.
Keep up the good work guys! _________________ When I think of something to say - I'll be the first to know

Good point. I guess we cannot discount the possibility that for the 30 cars they did use at least some kind of press tools. Also I think the Daimler Benz factory must have pulled as many workers as they could afford to, off their regular assembly lines. Considering this was a high profile project that attracted personal interest of AH, they probably didn't have much choice. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |

After more than 80 years, finally someone does these headlights some justice!
I have never realized the slight crease that the headlight bucket has on the top, BTW. I'll have to update my scale model once the build is finished.
Thanks for the ongoing documenting, Undis! |

More progress on the headlight work by René Große Restaurierungen. This part will be right on the money unlike all the other previous replicas.

Is it the perspective which is making the top arch of the windscreen look more flat then the photo?
This is one hell of a project undertaking.. _________________ Even YOU can prevent FIRES!
