Hello. In the process of restoring my 68 bus. Speedometer has been working although it does bob up and down. Not real smooth. Today however it started to just spin clockwise pretty quickly. Then when I stopped the needle was stuck at 70 mph. Can this be repaired by my mechanic or is this speedometer shot? Again it was spinning clockwise at a pretty rapid pace

might be the cable but could be the speedo. Have to ask your mechanic if he/she has experience with speedo's. If it were me and mine was bad, I'd probably replace the cable. if that didn't get it, replace the speedo with one from the same year bus, and reset the odo to the same mileage if that sort of thing is important to you, otherwise just put a note with your bus paperwork that the odo was replaced reading X with one reading Y.

Most common issue with the speedo needle doing that drunken bobbing thing.....is either the square hole in the front wheel bearing dust cap that drives the speedo cable is worn and the hole is rounded and the cablle lig is slipping......or in the same spot.....the "e" clip that holds the cable on is missing.

if the speedo stopped at 70 and didn't return to zero there is an issue between the drum and the slip plate/magnet

you may get lucky and it can get cleaned up or it just may have shit the sheets

I would probably disconnect the cable from the speedo and then spray some WD40 into the back of the speedo. If the WD40 does the trick, once it drains and mostly dries up I would put a couple of drops of 3-in-1 oil in there.

I would also lubricate the cable while I was at it "just because." If that doesn't get it, as mentioned above get a replacement speedo for the same/similar year.

That is the shop that rebuilt my speedometer several years ago. They did a very nice job and the speedo still works perfectly.

Thanks for the back up Larry.

This shop is made up of a couple old guys who fix stuff and a nice old lady that does the books. I’ve been there a few times and their work is top notch. Just the kind of shop that we should all be doing business with.

Why anyone wouldn’t send their original speedo to them and buy something unknown is a mystery to me. Plus, your problem is not the cable. Cables bind up or break. They don’t act the way your instrument is. Just send it in and get it fixed.

These are instruments from a 1967 Split bus they did. The speedo and fuel gauge.

My speedometer was bouncing badly and I kept snapping speedo cables no matter how well I lubed them. After Foreign Speedo rebuilt mine the needle is rock solid and I have not broken a cable. They told me the "lube" inside mine was a semi-solid block of dirt and grease. Hope you have a similar experience with that shop.

I will see what the mechanic says. He said the wiring and connections in the dash are brittle which makes me super nervous. This bus sat on my dads property in the high desert of So Cal which is pretty dry year round. I thought the solution would be to have the bus rewired but after reading several forums it sounds like keeping my original wiring is the way to go???

A wiring refresh can be a good idea for long-term function. But if you go there, use good OEM-type connectors, and keep the wire colors as best you can. There are folks who sell short bits of wire in many gauges and colors.

If you try to install all new wiring good luck. Just under the dash will be hard. Doing the whole bus would be very tough. I’ve never done it and wouldn’t want to try

most of the harnesses sold are fuse box to engine compartment and rear lights. They don't include the front which is what you want. You'll need a complete harness and it will be a lot more work than you can imagine. It took me only 1 day with a couple big printouts of the wiring schematic, a VOM and the proper crimps and tools to make sure my 1977 was like factory fresh. It is only intimidating because it seems like a lot of wires. Think like a long journey - it is only one step at time. One wire at a time. You can mark them on the schematic as you check each one. Now, if mice and rats were in there chewing, that is different.

Wolfsburg West is in Corona CA. They SAY they make a complete one for a 68-69. You might call or visit them and see what it is like. https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211971028FC

A couple people in other threads spoke highly of this company in the UK being the one to get. http://www.vwlooms.com/
