search endless upholstery material catalogs and then if you get lucky finding appropriate material, have a custom cover stitched.
or, you can dye a cover to match. The vinyl dyes work quite well, but I'm not sure how long they would hold up to serious usage, or being left outside in the brutal summer heat or under snow _________________ drive your split. |

Nice work, Rick!
———
If I was sourcing a late model Vinyl cover now, I would look out for a light-coloured nos one
And then get a dye matched to the body colour
Several different shaped covers though, so be mindful of that!
Something like:
Pre-55: 4 square corners (3-fold)
56 only: Front corners round, rear corners square (2-fold)
57-63: 4 corners rounds (2-fold)
I get the impression the fit of the repro covers are dubious…maybe being too tight/narrow…resulting in an imperfect fit.
I also wonder how true to the original design they are.
Suppliers - TMI, WCC, Sewfine? Other?
If anyone has experience in repro cover fit, please chime in
If the car should have a Canvas cover, I would probably look for a skilled, kindly coachtrimmer…one who is prepared to listen (!), and who has done a few VWs sunroofs before…& preferably with me having an old original cover and headlining section in hand to copy.
I would also sound out Marcus Rakete (BeetleKey) in Germany. Tough dude to deal with, but an expert.
I’m not sure when the change from Canvas to Vinyl was…with the 1958 big window? _________________ -StockRocks- |

Man those Colour-Coded Sunroofs are just awesome looking. The Red with the Red Sunroof, and the Blues, just beautiful. I had a 60 India Red Sunroof that had a Cream/White Canvas top when I bought it, I have always wondered what color top the car would have come with? I replaced it with a Black rag from WW in the late 80s, not correct but I did it during my Cal-Look days.

Runkle, cool photo. Shows the wheel and interior colours.
Difficult to beat these off-white cars.
The ladies love to cram their seat forward, leaving no option to remotely straighten your arms. Bizarre
Nice story, Bill. Yes…there was a lack of easy information and photo evidence back then.
And most people probably thought contrast was the way to go - influenced by the magazines - hell, show off that cool sunroof option!
Yes, that survivor Coral Red ragtop has got it
A lot of dollars at $25k
