I can't look at this without picturing skinning my knuckles on the decklid. But probably works? |

I remember this ad. It was in the old Warshawsky and J.C. Whitney catalogs when they actually sold real parts. I remember rebuilding my 1200 engine for next to nothing back then. |

You better have Popeye arms with a 9.5:1CR engine. _________________ Glenn

My mother used to use her purse strap when her Bug would not start in the 60s so my Dad bought her this. He built Saturn V , space shuttle , LEM, and Concorde. In many ways, she is still more impressive.
You had to drill a hole in the generator pulley for the pin. It worked well on a 1200/ 40 HP _________________ .ssS! |

Why? Do you not have a wife?
Just kidding!
I have push started our Bay Bus many times, several Beetles, our Jetta TDI once and even our 944! That my friends is one of the many advantages of driving a stick! Bad starter? Poor battery? Left the lights on?

Just once, I would like to see someone push start an autostick. Friend of mine and I tried it once on a downhill slope, but never got it to work. It apparently can be done similar to the 4 speed, but you have to really get going. Haynes manual is not very clear on how exactly this works, just says "use Low gear." So I guess you shove it from neutral into Low to pop the clutch? _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Would that work without the engine running to supply oil to the torque converter! Or is there enough oil in the converter to get some sort of limited coupling? _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. The torque converter retains quite a bit of ATF fluid, but I have no idea what would be required... all I know is what I read in the Haynes manual, so a friend and I decided to try it, but never got it to work. The Haynes manual is not really clear on the exact procedure, just says it can be done.
I think I'd try the pull rope trick before the clutch pop on an autostick. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

For what it's worth, I never have push started an Autostick, but I did get one started by towing it. Yes, the torque converter will spin the engine up just fine without the engine running first. This particular car had its transaxle physically stuck in top gear so the starter wouldn't work (neutral safety switch wasn't bypassed), and it fired up once we got it going around 20mph. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |
