Since I am waiting on parts for the front end I decided to spend some time today working on one of the jalousie windows I am converting to fit into the syncro at the kitchen (middle drivers side).

First steps are to disassemble and then clean the parts of the aluminum corrosion.

(Actually the first step is to cut off the flanges that are used to mount the jalousie to a bay window bus. I did that last summer though.)

I run each piece across the brass wire wheel in the background and then finish with 400 grit by hand to get down to nice shiny aluminum.

(Please use leather gloves and goggles when using that brass wire wheel.)

After the brass wire wheel.

Now on to the 400 grit.

After about three hours of detailed sanding with 400 grit we have shiny pieces. Now on to putting on new seals/gaskets on all the pieces.

Just ordered new struts for the rear hatch. It will have a Gary Lee rack and bikes and cook box like the euroBus.

These struts.

I am really liking the attention to detail on your build. This will be a great finished project.

Sorry that I have gone on to a different platform. The Vanagon community is like non other.

You are always welcome at our gatherings. Different platform or not.

I’ll be sure to get with you when I have the syncro out there. Very Happy

Worked on the second jalousie. This one will go in the passenger side rear position. That is shorter than the middle sides so I have to shorten all the horizontal pieces. Careful work with a dremel fiber cut off wheel will replicate the notches in the original pieces.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And they are both reassembled. I already had tempered glass made for the shortened jalousie. 35% ceramic tint on the panes.

Tomorrow I will add the aluminum strips on the sides to replicate the dimensions of the stock window glass.

My hands are sore…

Your pictures make the Jalousie rebuild seem so easy and enjoyable.

For whatever reason rebuilding mine keeps on getting bumped further and further down the list. I'm guessing it's one of those, 'I wish I would have done this years ago' by the time they finally get installed.

You will love it when they are installed! All my buses get them.

But if you clean and rebuild them like I am it is a messy, fiddly process. I have about 16-20 hours into the set of two so far.

If all I wanted to do was install a set of used jalousies with no rehab work I could have skipped the 20 hours and gone straight to the modifications to make it fit the window opening... which is next. Razz

Glued the aluminum strips on to the full size jalousie to replicate the glass dimensions. After the glue sets I will radius the corners.

Got the aluminum strips onto the shortened jalousie. Notice the curved pieces on the far side of the jalousie. That follows the shape of the rear angle and curve.

And while I pulled the steering rack I took the opportunity to photo what is left of the front CVs. The OPs really did not do much maintenance it seems. Laughing

Today I drove up to visit Matt Steedle in NJ and dropped off the tranny and diff. We’ll see what it looks like inside in a few weeks. He has a big backlog and we are waiting on a Peloquin too.
