I always thought in 65, they made the seat bottom more narrow when measure front to back, but I just pulled one out of a 66 that has the longer measurement, so now I am second guessing and can't find an answer in the forum.

Just measured my 65 ( Oct 64 ) seat and it is longer like your top picture.

The only conclusion I can come to is the more narrow seat bottoms are late oval beetle.

My '66 (February) rear seat is also measuring at 17"
