That is a nice bus and cool funky camping interior! Cure the underside rust and weld in new metal. You should look into a tilt fixture to get that done much easier. Then just touch up the upper sides paint after removing the little rust there and replace all the window and door seals to keep future water out.

Hey there ToolBox thank you for the excellent referral! Very Happy I camped with those airheads one icy winter a few years back when I had an aircooled Vanagon Westy and found them to be a good crew. I will likely be seeing them again once the weather clears.

For some reason it had this big truck mirror mounted here at some point, even though it already has two VWOA hinge mirrors. I've seen the truck mirrors. I've seen the hinge mirrors. Now I've seen both on the same bus!

Nice find. I really dig the patina and the bus looks fairly solid overall. Looks like you can enjoy after its road worthy and fix the rust spots at your leisure. I think the camper kit is really functional and cool. I have not seen a layout quite as versatile as yours. I look forward to seeing your progress and am excited to see another bus brought back to life. Enjoy!

I used to have a 1965 Sportsmobile that was identical to yours. Mine had the water cabinet hung on the rear swinging door by a U shaped piece of metal on the door and maybe an upside down U on the cabinet (I can't remember for sure, I sold the bus over 12 years ago) I'll see if I can find any pics of it. Maybe the person that bought if form me is still on here and can get some recent pics added also.

It may have been, although more recently out of Kentucky. I found it on Craigslist, however, which was an anomoly as the splits don't show up there anymore in my part of the world. I had travelled across the entire State of Ohio for work, and have a habit of checking out the local ads as long as I've made it to wherever I've made it to. This was just another hour more drive beyond my destination so I decided to make the hop as the day would already be fully spent in the end. For me, it makes it all worthwhile and the drive becomes a bughunt rather than just a drudgery for work. Never did I imagine I'd be setting into motion a series of justifications and mental gymnastics that would land me a split camper. Couldn't get this camper out of my mind so went back for it the next week.

I'm really glad I did, as the Spidey Sense was dialed in. Today I took a torch to the few bolts that held up the front pan and dropped the hammock of mouse nests and paper wasp nurseries. Honestly surprised and excited about the condition of things behind the nose as I had expected much worse. Very Happy

It has Pedigree!!! It's a Campmobile/Sportwagen/Sportmobile! According to the information in another thread, in the first years the company made camping interiors and shipped them to Volkswagen in Germany for installation into buses there as Campmobiles and then the Campmobiles were shipped to the U.S for sale. Then, the company started working with VW of America for dealer installations here in the U.S.

Here is the thread talking about it....

A brochure for the next year's 1967 model from the archives, showing many of the same modular interior components, and the red stripe curtains too:

Looks like a solid start, can't wait to see what you do with it! If you still have that fiberglass camper trailer you've gotta put a hitch on this bus, that would be an epic combination.

Fired up the waste-oil heater and gave the girl a bath. Soaked in Westleys, then soaked in Purple Power, then light swirly motions with a green Scotchbrite pad for the exfoliation. If my maker is willing, this will be one day be followed with a soaking in CLR to remove the rust stains and then sealed under wax. For tonight, she smells good and looks even better.
