Hello. I am new to the forum, so how's it going? I have a question concerning my 73 campmobile. It is a hybrid bus (she has a 78 engine, Weber progressive, 009, blue coil, you get the picture). Now I need to replace the alternator, and I was just wondering if this was an easy, or tedious job. I am in no way a seasoned mechanic. All I have is Saint Muir's Idiot manual, and you kind folks. I would like to learn how to work on my own bus just to find out how she works, and to save myself some bread. Now, she ran fine all last summer, and into the winter, but she needs an alternator, and I just need an idea of how to remove it, and replace it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Peace.

I would also use a Bentley shop manual...I believe it would cover both the '73 and '78 models, so you would find info on all the parts in your hybrid bus. I always follow the shop manual, but like you I also like Muir's explanations of what mistakes or problems we are likely to encounter. Good luck!

Acccording to Bentley, here's how you get it out:
1. Remove the hose clamp from the oil filler and remove ther oil filler neck.
2. Remove the oil dipstick & grommet off the dipstick tube.
3. Remove the screws that hold the right rear part of the engine cover plate, slide the plate up and off the oil filler pipe.
4. Remove the oblong insert from the alternator cover plate. Loosen the socket head screw at the top of the alternator.
5. Loosen the lower alternator mounting bolt, swing alt. to the left and unhook drive belt.
6. Remove lower alt. mounting bolt and take off alt. cover plate.
7. Remove wiring harness and its grommet from engine sheet metal enough to remove wires from alt.
8. Remove alt. cooling air rubber elbow from fan housing.
9. Remove screws for the alt. tensioning arm bracket, then remove alternator together with the tensioning arm bracket.
