Battery Thoughts (reality check/current (haha) update)

1. Optima batteries Cost just under $200 but are no longer good quality/or spiral wound Now generic AGM and new owner..

2. Interstate Group 42 the old standby workhorse ( 9” x 7” x 7” ) Cost less than $100 and is used with good performance by many. Down side. It leaks on the pan...

3. Walmart (a.k.a. WarranteeMart) Mighty Max. (Thank goodness for replacement warrantee!!! My daughter bought a Mighty Max for her 86 Bronco II back in 2006. The car died ~ the car sat and when she got $300 from the salvage guy we kept the battery. It was super dead but still under warrantee. So off to WalMart upgrade to largest Mighty Max for my 87 F 250 Plow truck... Jump ahead to 2014. About every 12-15 months the batteries just dies. I take it out and off to Walmart for a new DUD... Free Duds hassle included (no extra charge) I have a red top optima (old style that has been in various vehicle continually since 2000. This includes over 3000 miles off road deep in Mexico in my 99 Ranger 4x4 XLT where it had lived since 2008 when the Ranger’s 9 year old Interstate died... My 06 Subaru (an Optima will not fit) has had three replacements from Walmart {Free Duds hassle included (no extra charge) }

4.
Odyssey: The new great hope..

ODYSSEY Batteries PC 925 (VW) the end suffix added after pc925 determine terminal type sae post/clamp or bolt on 1/4” ring terminals (same connector as a side terminal battery except Odyssey uses superior brass connectors. Pricey? (around $200) We just bought one for a 73 Thing and a second 55 amp Odyssey ($150) for our The XPower Powerpack 1500 system (portable solar powered 1500 watt (inverter) 120 volt AC/ DC power station.) We will report back after we have used and abused these new Odyssey (“PURE LEAD plates not lead alloy) batteries.

ODYSSEY BATTERY PROPAGANDA

Phenomenal starting power and massive deep cycle reserve power in one battery!

Some batteries provide enormous cranking power. Others, deep cycle reserve power. The revolutionary ODYSSEY battery is designed to do both.

How is this possible? The answer begins with flat plates made of 99.99% pure virgin lead - not lead alloy. Pure lead plates can be made thinner, so we can fit more of them in the battery. More ODYSSEY battery plates mean more plate surface area. And that means more power - twice as much as conventional batteries.

In fact, ODYSSEY batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses in excess of 2250 amps for 5 seconds - double to triple that of equally sized conventional batteries, even at very low temperatures. And they can handle 400 charge-discharge cycles to 80% depth of discharge.

This extreme combination of power and performance makes ODYSSEY batteries perfect for a range of applications, including automotive/LTV, marine, commercial, and powersports.

Designed and built to last up to 3 times as long.

Thanks to rugged construction and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) design, ODYSSEY batteries have an 8-12 year design life and a 3-10 year service life. Welded intercell connections enable it to withstand extreme vibration, and AGM design holds acid in place to prevent spills, even when installed on its side. And unlike conventional batteries, ODYSSEY batteries can be stored for up to 2 years at 25C (77F) and still be returned to full power. Storage times will be even longer at lower temperatures.

I have an Interstate in my Bus that I purchased in 2015. I started it yesterday for the first time in over 4 months with no problems. I have a 2006 Silverado and the factory battery lasted just over 11 years. I’ve had to put two Interstate batteries in it since (actually three, the second one started leaking after a few weeks). I guess the quality is not very consistent.

I had it disconnected since at least November. My Work gets busy and its cold as hell here all winter. I had major hernia surgery in January and it is just warming up and i had 20 miniutes of time. I had the f@#$$% top terminals and the stupid seat springs. Ideally i would love a side terminal that fits in there good. I just got a battery tender/charger off amazon and it is coming tomorrow so I'll see. It was weird because it started to crank and then just went dead. Hoping i didnt fry something

Obus,

Sorry to hear of your battery issue. I'm having good luck w Interstates in over a dozen current vehicles, but maintenance is key. I pull most of my vehicle's batteries indoors for the winter and tend them, roll the dice with the ones left in. Unmaintained they will all discharge/freeze.

Can you warranty your Interstate? I use an MT-41 (modern VW style) battery in my Thing as the posts are dropped and miss the springs/hoops. I make sure the supplied positive side plastic cover is on. Some minor battery hold down mod may be needed, but not much. I have not had much success with side-post batteries, even in their OEM applications. The screw-in terminals are prone to loosen or make a poor connection, in my experience.

Jim

it was a 30 month warranty and it recently expired. Thing was indoors all winter in a non insulated garage with no tender but unhooked. My bus in the same garage stayed hooked up to its optima all winter and started right up. i am weighing my options between optima and odyssey i think. Thanks for your views on the types of hook ups vws-microcars4jim
