The steel wool is the problem, steel is harder than aluminum and will scratch it.

Red compound is usually a cutting compound, not for finishing.

Thanks! so just no steel wool: move from 2500 grit to polish? what other options are there in lieu of red? I see theres something called 'dremel 421'. will that work? suggestions will be helpful!
