One of my pet peeves with old VW’s is the front seating. Since I’m tall they just don’t fit me. They’re too high, too close to the steering wheel, and feel like a big couch. So I usually go with Scat Pro 90 seats. But I didn’t want black vinyl this time. So after a lot of debating I went a set of Cerullo seats with a blue tweed insert. The other issue is that the aftermarket seat adapters are always too tall. But the owner of Cerullo swore that their adapters were made specifically for their seats, and were made as low as possible. So I took a gamble, and lost. They didn’t fit well at all, were taller then stock, and were way more then what Scat sells. Turns out they’re the same. So as I have had to in the past, I had to cut them way down to a reasonable height. But also, original Thing seat rails are mounted crooked. And since the drivers side of Homer had been patched/hacked in, I just decided to eliminate the stock rails all together. Thanks to Daniel Hood for the help welding everything together, and bouncing ideas off of each other. The new seats now sit perfectly. And are way more comfortable.

Homer the Thing… awhile ago my neighbor gifted me 16 quarts of Wurth bed liner with spray guns and all. I figured I would use it somewhere. And since the previous owner put a layer of liner on Homers floor before, and we had to do a bunch of metal repair… Homer was the perfect candidate for a fresh coat. The coating was dated 2006 but after a test run, it seemed fine. But the kits came with the wrong spray gun bottles. Maybe just as well. I brushed and rolled it on instead. It was a sticky, messy 3 hours but I think

New built up transaxle from Scott at Metalcraft. Late model two sided case, super diff, welded cross shaft with late model 3.88 internals.

Lots of work going on. Trunk, engine compartment and back end painted. Cerullo bucket seats with modified seat mounts powder coated and in. Locking Berg shifter, e brake handle, lots of rubber plugs, brake fluid reservoir, battery, front wire harness cleaned up and put in. And reworking the rear harness started.

Who painted the car and what paint did you use?
What gear ratio's did Scott use and how long did it take to have the tranny gone through?
Thanks |

A local guy I know named Lorenzo did the paint work. Single stage Valspar from NAPA. And the gearing is stock for a 3.88 box. It’s 3.78, 2.06, 1.26, .093. Since we’re friends it took awhile. 😊 _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

What size rear tires are you going to run with the 3.88 ring and pinion?
I know you won't be running a stock engine. |

205/65x15’s on the back. And 175/65x15’s on the front. And your right. It’s getting a 1968cc engine, mild ported 40x35.5 valves, 110 cam and 40 Dells. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

Looking good and yes, there are so many damn little rubber parts on the Thing.
That tranny looks nice, and I am sure the inside is even nicer. Did you sell that other tranny you had listed a while back and why did you do with a dual side cover case?
Thanks |

Yes, the old one has been sold. And Scott would be the one to explain why we did the dual sided case. It was just the best option at the time. And I trust him when it comes to this. He`s the best. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

The work keeps on creeping along. He`s almost ready to go though. I`m waiting on oil line fittings, but should be in next week. I got a nice custom made sidewinder exhaust setup from a friend. But he made it to fit his Thing which also had custom made bumpers. So some work was necessary to make it fit. And had to make a set of 1.5" J tubes. And the muffler should be fitted this weekend. Then I can fire it up. Aside from that. I need to fit my Thing Shop top. Bleed the brakes. Put the gas heater together and back in. And have some rear seat pads made to match the front seats.

Homer now has a new owner. But Oscar_Dubbs recently posted a cool short on YouTube that he filmed while we were at the awesome show in San Juan Bautista.
