In RUNKLE's photo, I wonder if the "decals" in the upper section of the windshield are two of the "Grossglockner" Austrian alpine road day passes? They are shaped like the upper case letter "G".
Here's an image of the decal- probably a later version- from blauchen's Samba want ad in 2020- |

You are correct, those are großglockner hochalpenstraße decals. The example from blauchen's want ad as you stated is not correct for the time period, and being oval looks to be copied from the badge design, as the decals I’ve seen were round. _________________ Type 1

The first 100,000 Volkswagens arrive in 1940.
At the 5th Reich Conference of the NSG "Kraft durch Freude" in Hamburg, Reich Office Director Dr. Lafferentz announced that production of the Kdf-Wagen in Fallersleben would begin at the end of this year, so that the first 100.000 Kdf-Wagen could be finished in 1940.

I assume the 1930s grossglockner badge would be more like this

always happy to see a period shot of 2-tone paint to the body line, rather than the trim line. No weird paint line on the door hinge.
That is how i painted my first car, 59 beetle. _________________ regards

I. R. O. stands for International Refugee Organization. Founded in 1946 to deal with the massive refugee problem created by WWII. _________________ Type 1

Leaky rear axle seals must have been a chronic problem back then, because we we see it in many of these early photos.
