I moved the white LEDs up the brake-light position and ordered up a pair of red ones.
So I was planning to mount the front fenders today but I decided that the engine being out would be a great time to resolve the TPS issue. Some continuity testing show it to be a broken wire. Sure hope I don't have to do any of THAT on the road.

Not a bad day
Spent some time on the phone with the DMV and the Colorado Springs Police people. The DMV lady says that in order to retitle the car, they only need a simple verification of the VIN on the car. No safety equipment inspection. And the cop shop will do the VIN verification if I can get the car down there. I don't know what kind of nonsense Randy Bowen was doing, but if the local police will sign the form and that is all the DMV needs ... I be golden! Soon as the car is self-propelled again I can do all that.
The car now has four fenders mounted. But I took both doors back off. The doors were in the way during the fender mounting process and I need to make some shims for the hinges anyway. I'm also gonna need some touch-up paint.
Before it was painted I was shown the car with everything hung and the gaps were really nice. Unfortunately I can't ask the paint guy how he did that so I'm making shims and will be asking advice here at theSamba.
With all four fenders on I can now put the front lights on and finally test the blinkers. I'll be using the 9-pin relay from the squareback. Assuming I wired it correctly, it still should work. I also have a backup 9-pin if I need it.
Before I pulled the engine last week I got a look at the position of the engine hanger supports. They aren't native to the 67 and were welded in by some previous PO. They are a little to the rear from where they should be. In addition the engine and the subframe are also sitting a little low by maybe an inch wrt the body. The torque-tube support indicates this as well. Big gap there but all vertical. Probably wind up with a spacer there down the road when the engine becomes a 2110. The air boot lines up fine but that is pretty forgiving. And the shift coupler is fine on the other end. The whole back structure of the car was stitched together from probably three different cars so I'm not too surprised I guess. I have a pair of brand new hangers from ISP and an old crusty set. The crusties are taking a bath in EvapoRust right now so I can use metal from them to customize the new ones to make everything line up.
So tomorrow is mounting the front lights and seeing what does and does not work with the electrics. Then it's under the dash I go. Oh boy.

Max,
always love seeing updates about your beautiful fasty. I can't wait to see it under its own power!! The color you chose on top of that... its like a darker version of the early ghia Burnina blue to me (my favorite vw color ever) and it just works on a fasty. Keep at it man its looking great , home stretch indeed! _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

There were two issues with the brake lights. First, I did have them miswired. Instead of the lights being wired to the switches on the MC then back to the fuse block, they were wired directly to the fuse block. Second ... I have the wrong switches. I need the two terminal switches not the single terminal ones that would provide switched ground. I should be able to pick up some switches tomorrow.
The blinkers sort of work ... they flash at about twice normal speed and the indicator light on the dash does not blink. The indicator bulbs test good. The signal lights themselves are blinking front and back. Other lights on the gauge do work so it's not a ground issue.
I also discovered that if I raise the front of the car with gas in the tank and no engine, fuel runs back through the return line and onto the floor.
And I have a brake fluid leak either at the reservoir or the lines running to the MC. Thanking myself for using DOT-5 so it isn't eating the paint. Looks like I'll be taking the tank out one more time to fix the leak. That will also make it easier to replace the brake switches.
And finally, the flywheel seal installation tool should arrive Thursday. One thing I've decided to do while the engine is still out is reindex the rear torsion bars. I need about 5 degrees.

I have leds for the parking and stop lights. Regular bulbs for the flashers.

Thanks. This has become a sprint to the finish. I'm out there every day I don't have life things going on, mainly Dr appointments. I got one of those this morning.
Cold weather is no longer a factor as Summer has arrived.
There are some things that just won't be done in the next four weeks. There won't be an interior. SewFine is just too backed up. That includes seats. My seats came from the local pull and pay (junk yard). The wheels I want can't be sourced in time (the guy who does custom deep dish wheels gave me 90 days back on 19 April so I'll be running the old Mangles from my old squareback. The bumpers that were on this car when bought are serviceable but not particularly nice. And I don't have correct bumper bolts so something incorrect might be used. None of these things will keep the car from being driven.
Probably 50/50 that I bring the thing on a trailer, drivable but not ready for 4000 miles without a life-boat.

Well dang. You are correct. The top position is for turn signals. I have the bottom position wired to the blinkers with a regular bulb. I can fix that.
Thanks.

Would you wire it with LED bulbs so that when you figure out how to make it all work, I can copy you? Pretty please?
Thanks.

I'm probably staying with regular bulbs for the blinkers for the time being. But I'm pretty sure there have been threads on the topic already.
Alright ... brake lights now work. And the brake fluid leak was from the bottom of the reservoir. I cleaned and realigned all that and put it back together. It didn't leak right away but I'll keep an eye on it. It was just a weep before.
Off to the store for some self-etching primer.
Oh, those brake switches went and got expensive. $25 per.

Max, they sell direct electronic flasher relays that work where the thermal relay in a vw is. They are about 20 bucks. _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

I have an led flasher in my bug. Signals work, but the indicator in the speedo doesn’t work when the key is on, led bulb there, too. I’ll keep working on it. It’s a bug, or I’d start a thread. Searching comes up with things like ‘use resistors’ or points to VW electronics being magic. |
