My Delran Battery Tender Junior 12V 750 mA stopped working on my 12 volt Interstate battery for my 67 Westy. Oddly I have another Battery Tender Junior 12V 750 mA on my small British car also and that has stopped working at the same time or within 3 months of each other.

I have not received a reply from the manufacture and I'm not sure of the age, perhaps 3-5 years old or more on new Interstate batteries. The batteries test at 12.5 volts although the tenders are dead.

Am I using the correct type/size/model battery tender? Should I buy a different brand? Or the same?

Thanks, Linda

Yes oddly super clean. The terminals look like the day I bought the batteries. I had put a very thin layer of dielectric grease on th terminals when I bought them. I also checked the fuse in the tender and they are good. I also have a Yuasa Smart Shot 900mA Battery Charger Maintainer on my motorcycle battery and that works fine. Perhaps I should just buy 2 more of those? I would have thought the Dellran would have blown the fuse before they stopped functioning.

Linda,
I have multiple Deltran battery tenders. One died a few years ago, I contacted them and they sent me a new one. I couldn’t remember how old the dead one was, they didn’t seem to care back then.
Great customer service, hope they treat you as well. I know some of mine are over 10 yrs old and still working great.

Those tenders are not meant for a battery the size you are hooking them to in your cars in my opinion.

The problem is they see the larger battery never fill up and keep running on full charge which could burn them out.

Linda,
I should have mentioned, all of my tenders are the full size ones, not the junior ones. Also have a double two battery one for my Westy with two batteries, that is at least 10 yrs old and works perfect. Hope you get good customer service from Deltron.

I had a Junior burn itself out after several years on an ATV battery- it's "charging" light started flickering.

I also have one of the old 6v BTs that kept my '63 bug on charge for 10 years before it bought the farm.

I'm trying a Schumacher (sp) brand switchable maintainer on my diesel tractor right now and it seems to be great. I may switch to a multi-bank charger and build myself a battery maintenance cart for the fleet in the barn- a one-stop acid shop.

Very interesting BarryL so my battery never received a full charge? What unit are you using for your batteries for the 12 volt system?

Slip356 are you using the Deltran Tender Plus? I wanted to buy it but they have never replied to my emails (2) or returned my phone calls leaving me to think they are not worthy of 2 more units. I have searched for reviews and trust Consumer Reports but I couldn't find their reviews on battery tenders.

Most searches for reviews on battery tenders are sales related.

I have two Diehard battery "maintainers" and two Schumacher battery "maintainers" and all seem to be working great. I like that the Diehard and Schumacher units detect either 6 or 12 volt systems and then automatically switch to charge/maintain 6 or 12 volt batteries. Reasonable too at about $26 each. I also have a couple of HF mini size very basic feature and very cheap (at $6 each) trickle chargers but I don't really trust 'em. They might work fine but I'm not currently using those. I own four VWs that are 6 volt, and four that are 12 volt. I also have a nearly 20 year old normal 10 amp and 6V / 12 V Schumacher battery charger for quicker charging (not maintaining).

You need more amps than the one you have. I use this one but there are a multitude of charger/maintainers these days.

That is exactly the information I was looking for and forgot to ask, my amps of 0.75 were too low. Thanks BarryL.

If my local shop doesn't have these or similar 3A maintainers I'll go Amazon and order 2 of these Schumacher-SP1297 models. I try my best to keep local shops in business. Huge difference in price NAPA brand vs Schumacher-SP1297 vs Diehard.

NAPA Brand 3A maintainer @ $24.50

Schumacher-SP1297 3A via Amazon @ $50.00:

DieHard Smart Charger Automatic 12 V 3 amps Battery Charger/Maintainer via ACE Hardware @ $110.00

I have a bunch of the cheapie HF maintainers and have had good luck with them, they're rated at a half amp IIRC. Current price is about $9-10.

I have this unit. Bought it at Costco for $35. It has been running strong for 4 years without issue.

The current unit offered by Costco is the 4.5amp supersmart charger at $45.

Yep! They have gone up in price over the last couple of years...

I did a quick look at my maintainers down in the garage and the models that I own/use are:

Schumacher SC1319 fully automatic microprocessor controlled 6 volt or 12 volt battery charger and maintainer.
features: 1.5 amp maintainer, voltage detection, float mode, reverse hook-up prevention
bought back in 2018 for $24.98 and currently on Amazon costs $38.20

(NOTE: the above units are also available in 2 amp and 3 amp models for a few more $s...

-----------------------------------

Diehard 28.71219 smart 6 volt or 12 volt battery charger and maintainer
This has reverse hook-up prevention (a warning light fleshes and the unit will not charge until polarity is corrected). does not have "automatic" switching between 6 or 12 volt. You select either 6 or 12 volt with a switch on the case face.
6 volt charging rate: 4 amps
12 volt charging rate: 2 amps
current cost on Amazon is $48.29 and I think a few years back they cost me around $27.

I like them both, they work great, but I suppose that if I were forced to decide between them, I guess I'd go for the Schumacher maintainers...

Go ahead, talk amongst yourselves!

Yup BarryL, and I ordered 2. The Schumacher-SP1297 model seems to be the winner for me. I ordered them from Lowes. I think I'm going to like this model as it has a display giving me the info I want to see. And if I ever get a 6 volt bus I'll have a charger for it too. One can dream. Cool

Yes BarryL the new chargers worked great, I wish I knew why the other 2 failed. Although I have an idea which I'll share later. Off to school.
Thank you kindly,
Linda
