That’s a potentially six figure car done right and if it’s complete and solid it’s a fair price for the right buyer. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Another fresh entry:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2549257
Looks like a portion of the front clip was replaced (driver's side, inner spare tire area) at some point? Low body # however. Interesting seat backs and door weather-strip placement, ample loads of plastic filler down low, etc..
Anyway, with a lot of courage, time, patience and, of course, a full wallet of $ (on top of the asking price), this one could return to its former glory. |

Here’s a new entry on OldBug.com. If this sells at its current price its going to be a world record! Looks like this collector is liquidating a very elite collection

That is on over the top custom. Stunning!
Randy Carlson at Oldbug has very good reputation within the community. He is a salesman/broker but incomparable to RT
Whoever ends up with it is going to have an incredible custom lo-light.
$125k is a stretch but you have to start somewhere. It's not a ridiculous starting point IMO. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

I'm wondering about this statement:
"When it comes to the Karmann Ghia, there is no higher step on the ladder of desirability than with a 1958 convertible. These "low light" models are the most beautiful and exclusive of the whole production run, and very rarely come up for sale."
Why would a 58 Vert be more desirable than then a 57 or 59 Vert?
For that kind of money, shouldn't the buyer at least get a boot?
Desirability would depend on who the buyer is? This is a sharp car but it doesn't appeal to me at all for 2 reasons: It's so perfect that I would be worried about taking it anywhere, and 2nd I think an all original restoration would be much more beautiful. _________________ Marc

This is an absolutely beautiful custom build however I would prefer an all original and correct restoration. These 58 convertibles are super rare, and to find one that hasn't been modded or molested would be golden. I wonder how much the custom modifications will affect the final price outcome? _________________ 1956 Beetle Oval Rag top with Judson SC

You see, if you say you don't like your Ghias slammed to the ground, you're branded a stock Nazi. I'm far from that, have a look at my '58 and you'll see incorrect parts all over the place.
Whilst I don't mind tastefully lowered Ghias, I find the slamming that necessitates a heavily narrowed beam that gives you the ugly rear 3/4 view shown on this Lowlight...the no-wheel look is an abomination in my opinion.

Shouldn’t the 58 have the little curve on the dash at the ends? The one on Old Bug does not. |

I thought I read that all 58.5 verts were sold as 59 model years? So I guess they would all have 59 features?
That car is very well done but that price is nuts unless you find the one guy out there with the money to buy it. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

There are no 57 convertible Karmann Ghias. So 58 is the "first year". Depending how far out a 59 is, it becomes more like a 60. Different dash, padded dash, different horn ring and different front turn signals. Lots of subtle changes that make it less desirable.
Super rare is an understatement but there are four for sale right now!
I almost cried when I saw it at Pardo this year. It was being shown in a dirt lot and had an inch of dust covering it. _________________ '58 Ghia 2387cc with a Berg / Folts 5 Speed

I had read that the convertibles came out in 57, but didn't realize it was for the 58 model year. _________________ Marc

There is a big difference between model year and the date the Ghia rolled off the assembly line. Many lowlight owners prefer to date their Ghia according to when it came off the assembly line because so many changes were being implemented through out each year. For example a Ghia convertible that rolled off the line in 57 has some major differences from a convertible that rolled off the line in January of 58 even though they are all 58 model year cars. Of the few remaining early production cabriolets from 57 that survive many of the owners consider them 57 convertibles even though they are 58 model year Ghias. |
