The new interior install is complete. The headliner had been done a bit back and now the rest is in.
New seat pads, covers, door and rear panels, sound deadening, underlayment padding and carpet, updated seat belts...
Close to road ready...

Got to ride in a tow truck...apparently I either leaked 6 gallons of gas out of my Beetle or someone siphoned it off...I do have a tank leak that we found today so REALLY hoping that is the cause...pretty sure it isn't though...so tomorrows post will be "locking gas cap installed"... _________________ 1968 VW Beetle Sedan |

Fitted my new trim and handleless bonnet to one of my 03's. Still need to fit the colour coded headlamp rings, next week hopefully!

Today I installed the rubbers and the electrical loom in the engine compartment.
The heat isolation will be installed tomorrow and after that, the engine will be installed! _________________ My 71 super project: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=765788 |

Tried to start it!
Battery was dead so jumped it and got it going.
But it stopped right away and won't start again.
Hmmm, shouldn't have let it sit all winter!
Any ideas?

When you state it won't start again, you NEED to clarify:
1. engine cranks at typical speed but doesn't start
2. engine fails to crank/spin
Remember: "she won't turn over" is a question for Dr. Phil !!!!
I will say that when battery is truly "dead", that jump starting and trying to charge the battery by driving puts great load on the charging system; better to do a real re-charge on the battery first. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Bought a seagrass floor runner and cut a floor mat out of it for the drivers side, passenger side will be next...
Eventually I will put a vw logo patch in the middle. |

I wire brushed more of the dust and build up off the last of the engine tin to get it wiped down for a quick coat of paint. Next will be paint thinner and acetone washes before new paint.
I also did a light wire brushing of the case and worked to get all the detritus out of the cylinder cooking fins, which is looking a lot better.
Got a few questions on it though.

Nothing to mine, but I did change the fix the parking brake handle and adjust the rear brakes on a friend's '69, and changed the oil on another's '70 convertible. Mine took a backseat today as I had to install a window AC unit in wifey's home office and mow the lawn!! _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Finally got both Scion seats installed. A real pain. I welded the beetle tracks to the Scion seats.

Man, those look great. I'd love to see some shots of how you went about welding the Beetle seat frames to the bottom of these. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

I didn’t take any in progress pics. Sorry. But, I’ll explain what I did. The drivers seat was the most challenging, because of the extra mechanisms for lumbar adjustments. The vw tracks are too tall to just plop the seat on top. So I stripped every bracket and bumpy weld off the seat track. Then cut and grinder everything out off the scion seat. I ended up sliding the seat over the tracks, like a shower cap. It required many trial attempts and notching the tracks. Then I welded the seat to the frame everywhere it made contact. Not ideal, but worked out. Hope this helps. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far
