yes, I think the quality of components/materials was a bit hit and miss in those days - nice bonnet spot lamp though!

This looks like a split but it's from '53 so who knows.

yes that's karl meier's accessory demonstrator. he started out making seat covers and cushions then expanded to spoilers and roof racks etc see more on their website https://www.kamei.de/en/company/history

Pretty sure this car is in the VW Stiftung AutoMuseum.
It's a crotch cooler split, although they say it's a '53.

(From finster, yesterday)-
A lot of fabrication work went into this one (or all 4 per the hand-written comment at lower left). The door's lower hinge is usually "3 fingers" distance from the bottom edge of the door. This one looks like the bottom of the door was cut nearly even with the bottom of the hinge. This would "section" an easy portion of the body to drop it down overall.
The front fenders appear to retain their stock height, but the entire body has been dropped down so that the hood's original channel is now even with the highest point of the fender. Hood was significantly narrowed.
Front apron lengthened upwards to meet the shortened hood, fenders welded to the body. Porsche was building the first few dozen 356 Coupes in Gmuend, Austria in '49; I wonder if Mr. Schwen got inspiration from the 356's nose shape to imitate it on this Beetle? 2nd stock bumper mounted atop the original one.

Still working at Tempelhof Airport post war:
Very much post war by the looks of the aircraft.
Such a wonderfully versatile vehicle. Loved by many, myself included. |
