Bit of a strange problem this. The throttle cable is rubbing on the trans - you can actually see where it has worn away at the casing. Anyone have any idea what I can do to rectify this?

1/4" PEX from Home depot (for ice maker hookups) make a perfect sleeve, it even push fits over the ends of the metal body and shroud tubes.

And next time you change a throttle cable you don't have to crawl under to guide it. Wink

It’s supposed to be in a sheath from the tunnel exit up to the tube through the fan shroud.
At least on my Ghia it is.
There may be some early years that don’t.
Given your braided cable I’d put one on in any case.

Thanks fellas, that's great. I did not realise theres supposed to be a sheath between those two points. I'll check if I can get one for a bus.

I don’t believe buses ever came with that tube. You can try the throttle cable roller guide available on the Samba.

Make a tube if not available.

Accelerator cable bowden tubes come in many different lengths for buses and bugs and probably everything else.

I used one from a Type III (I think) on my ‘56 panel, sourced from my used VW parts stash and cut it to length. I bought a new one for a fuel injected late bus and cut it down to the proper length for my ‘66 single cab pickup.

I’ve had a few early transaxles with a deep groove worn into them from the accelerator cable. This time around I’m avoiding that potential failure point for the cable plus keeping the trans case from getting screwed up.

An old outer speedometer cable also works .
