|
|
Hey folks,
The other day I fandangled together a tool to remove the fan hub on a new engine I'm building for my bus. I'd thought I'd share it here in the hopes it'll help others
For materials:
- One broken ratchet socket, ideally 1/2 inch size, and I used a 16mm but find whatever fits. (Or buy one for a dollar at a thrift store)
Grind / cut the socket down to size. Mine ended up being roughly 14mm, but I think 13.5mm would be the sweet spot, I only had a few threads to work with at this length
Using the bolt and washer already found on the crank, assemble as so
Proceed to then screw this into the end of the crankshaft, then place the fan over the washer, and screw in the 3 bolts.
Tighten each one slowly, then get scared by the sound of the hub releasing and job done
Hope this helps
P.S. It goes without saying it doesn't have to be a socket. Any metal tube the size of the inner diameter of the fan hub should work. I just happen to have found a size 16mm socket that fits perfectly and it fits snugly on the bolt too _________________ 1973 Westfalia named Angie

Krafty!, but I'd be worried about bending the fan, hmmmm....... _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I was more worried about the washer actually, but yeah fair point. Everything looks fine (fingers crossed). It goes without saying to go slowly and tap a little with a hammer or something to break it loose _________________ 1973 Westfalia named Angie

nice. I always use that C shaped tool, #185, or if I can't find it a couple flat open end wrenches slipped in there to tighten down on.
