Thank you sir. I found the same kit on Amazon (for $13, just a fyi.), I just couldn’t wait for them to show up.
In the meantime, I tried the plating process with the pennies, but effectively just enriched the electrolyte with zinc instead.
However, the kits showed up last night, so I continued (learning) the plating process.
But while trying to get this one piece plated, the others flash rusted, so I get to start that process all over again.
So, with damn near nothing truly productive done for the last few days…

Yep, there’s the mood… F%#^ THAT S#*+!!
I ripped the backing plates off the original beam, pilfered the hardware & bolted up the refinished baking plates (Dammit, I shoulda refurbished these backing plates instead.)
Slid new wheel cylinders in with Super Beetle brake hoses (to compensate for the Thing spindles), tossed on a decent set of brake shoes that I had laying around…
And made the front brakes whole again. I will continue with plating, but ima gonna focus on making it a driver & swap out the hardware after it’s been plated. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

This morning I dunked a few lug bolts into the brine…
And promptly found something else to do while they percolated. Since I had already painted the master cylinder, I plugged it into place. To reduce the aggravation of trying to start the bolts, I found a rubber headlight seal cap from some later VW to help support it while I was on the inside attempting to start the bolts.
SWEET! Immediate success! So I formed the brake line into the correct shape to circumnavigate the pedal assembly & tucked a grommet into place.
I then went back to the trunk side & wriggled another grommet into place…
And after redirecting the brake line into the master cylinder, I removed the seal that I had inserted into the brake hose to keep insects from moving in.
Yes, this is a real thing, they will literally wait for you to turn your back before surreptitiously reappropriating your parts for their lodging…. Just like this evil little bastard that was eying me with ill intent.
You can see it at the lower left of the pic where it was writhing around after a quick shot of primer.
I then tweaked the other brake lines & installed them.
In and amongst installing the master cylinder, I would rotate & “comb” (polishing with a soft, brass bristled brush.) the lug bolts to insure a thorough coating & best possible finish. Here’s one fresh out of the brew.
And once they were buffed up.
And the first of the replated hardware to be installed…
WOOHOO! I did the thing! _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

what are you using for plating?
You need one of these,
Nickel plate
Your parts look good tho. I dont see any shadowing or burn marks. In case you didnt know, the surface finish before you plate is what determines luster after plated. If you decide to add brighteners, use them very very conservatively. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, 222 cam, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

The charging cable for the cheap ass, $12 scale. (Which also uses two AA batteries.)
The brightener? 400g of Karo syrup.
The rest of the electrolyte consists of 1.25 gal of white vinegar, 1,000g epsom salt, & about 20 pennies stripped of their copper coating. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

And 2 day shipping! But for real for reals, I applaud you were able to strip the plating off of coins and make it useful. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, 222 cam, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

Eh…. Sure, they cost more than standard replacements, but they’re cheaper than airbags & all the related crap needed to make it work.
Here’s how they compare to the original shock.
And you know I couldn’t wait to attach them.
Trust me, ima gonna pound the everlovin dog snot outa this beast. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

“Ladies & gentlemen, welcome to Wildebeest Air. Due to low altitude conditions, you can expect rough terrain & a bumpy ride. Please fasten your seatbelts…”
Anyway, reverting back to my “just make it run” philosophy, I scraped the chunks off the existing floor pan, & gave it a good Hoovering.
Hopefully all of those holes means that someone Waxoyled or Ziebart-ed the car early in life.
I then grabbed the previously blasted & painted pedal assembly, reattached the pedal pads, & bolted it back into place with some freshly plated bolts.
Now where did I hide that brake rod retainer clip?
Oh well, I put it in some safe place, let’s go pilfer one off another car. Let’s put it where it belongs until I have a chance to plate it. Then comes the fight to get the return spring back into place. Let’s see, I need a thin but sturdy hook… ahh, yes, previously plated brake shoe return spring.

Well, I missed being able to take the Wildebeest to yesterday’s show at Farmington, and I neglected doing any work on the Beest due to being at Farmington.
Anyway, I picked up the front tires & bolted them up.
(I’m beginning to question my decision to bump up to the 215s up front.
While the front was off the ground, & anticipating the whole bleeding process, I adjusted the front brakes.
By hey, there’s plenty of room under here now.
I then snugged all of the flare fittings & reattached the lines to the reservoir with new sections of hose.
(I guess I shoulda cleaned my grubby mitts before wrestling them on.) _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Eh, with no current form of motivation in it, the best I can do is kick it off the jack.
However, while the is no “go” yet, I worked on the “whoa” part.
After ratcheting down the rear adjusters, I filled the reservoir…
And distributed the fluid to the four corners…
(Ya gotta love being able to roll underneath the car to work on it without having to jack it up.)
And I now have an acceptable pedal feel. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Speaking of motivation, in anticipation of stuffing in some sort of power plant, I zipped out the remains of the old engine seal.
Then, after slipping the lower edge into the seal channel, I worked my way around the engine bay tucking the upper lip into the channel.
Until I had entire seal inserted into the channel.

First time I've ever commented on your stuff, but I love reading your builds. You're not afraid to dig in and you show a hell of a lot of common-sense building.

Thank you sir. These cars really are very simple. Having disassembled many cars with the intentions of making them perfect, I found out that once they’re apart, I am easily distracted by the next project. So now, instead of blowing a project completely apart, I try to do separate tasks, daily, until it’s drivable, so that 1)I haven’t tied up bays at the shop, and 2), everything doesn’t get lost in the meantime. So I just concentrate on one given job, on one section or subsystem, just like I do on every other car that comes into the shop.
That being said, a new toy showed up yesterday.
So, trying to put the blinders on, I set out to get an engine back into this beast. Having recently talked to the previous owner who said that the owner before him had driven the car to where it had been mothballed, years before he had rescued it (to let it languish for another couple of decades because the engine was seized.), I decided to see if I could coax it free.
So I removed the plugs…
And squirted some PBlaster into the cylinders.
And after a day of soaking, she finally let loose. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
