Well here is the thread for the class 11 that is being built, prepped, and raced by military active/vets and their family. The goal of the program is to teach vets the skills of what it takes to prepare for a race mechanically (race car prep, chase truck prep, race is won in the garage) and logistically (pit books, plans, spares, manpower and resource allocation). Teach them what all the pit duties are and how to conduct a support role at a race (chasing). Co-driver duties which involves gps usage, course notes (prerun and while racing), tire changes and trail fixes to get the car to the next pit. And then start working them into getting seat time behind the wheel. But most importantly getting a group of vets together and giving them the the comradery, support, challenge, mission accomplishment, and some of the adrenaline rush that they had and enjoyed in the military. It also allows the the opportunity to better or start their own race program with the skills and support needed to be successful. Or able to join one of the other race teams in any of the positions that are in a race team and they will be getting a skill person for that position and a military vet with the work ethic and dependability that comes along with that.

In this thread I will keep it updated with the build, prep, and racing of the class 11 car along with what is going on with the team when it comes to the class 11. So click the watch thread box to keep tabs on us or head over to Instagram @mcmurrinmotorsports who is heading up the 11 car team. The larger team of Desert Vets Racing also races UTVs and to see info on the large team go follow them on Instagram @desert_vets_racing. We have already gotten some great sponsors on board and being a non-profit that is huge since our budget is limited. But we are still out trying to source others for some of the major components.

-Empi has come on in a huge way helping with all the VW parts
-Maxima Oils not only came on for the 11 car but expanded that to all the DVR race cars and support vehicles
-Mobelwagen helping with those awesome new class 11 wheels
-VP Race Fuels CEO himself stepped up to help all the DVR cars
-Rugged Radios via HPR Socal helping all of DVR with comm equipment needs
-Wire Care inc helping with DVRs wiring material needs
-RT Systems providing all the software and cables needed for DVR to manage the programming of all their radios
-Industrial Metal Supply - San Diego helping provide all material needed for the class 11
-Raul Solano (Rulo) ORAF building the 11 car rolling chassis and providing all the major fab services
-Jorge Ventura providing priceless class 11 knowledge

There are a couple more that we have been talking with and will update when they come onboard. Hopefully when you are needing something that one of the above provide you would give them a call to support their business knowing that they are out supporting the veterans getting out in the community racing next to you.

We are still trying to source help with motor, trans, and tires.

First load of parts in from Empi and we can't be grateful enough for their support. In this pile is mostly stuff that is needed to cycle suspension in order to setup the travel stops on the car.

First part to get unboxed is the new Empi ball joint arms and ball joints. The arms are made to factory specs and in the same way the factory did. We want to start with a new arm instead of the original ones that are on the original stock car. With the car being new to us we don’t know what those front arms have been through. So using these new Empi ones we don’t have to worry about them being bent or cracked anywhere. Then comes the ball joints. That is not a question that we want to start with new parts. But these are not completely factory style ball joints. Empi has noticed what off-road cars have been doing to modify type 1 vw ball joints for some more travel. What you would have to do is go in with a small grinder and clearance the side of the joint for more angle. So they now offer it already done. Less work on your side and each one will be done the same making it more accurate then trying to each one by hand for replacement joints during between race preps.

Now the parts are headed off to Rulo so he can start setting up the front suspension on the rolling chassis.

Following, we too are building a Class 11 car to race in the Baja 1000; we are a veteran owned company. Look forward to seeing your progress

It will be fun to follow your builds. What do the cars look like that you are starting with?

Car is in the fab shop right now. I will not have it back in my shop until the end of April.

What did we do this week on the 11 car? We worked on some transmission drive flanges. The dark one is the nice billet Empi type 1 transmission to type 2 cv. Why do we want a type 2 cv? Larger and can handle more angles which equals more travel. But we will talk about that at a later time. The light colored flange is a 091 drive flange. You can see the difference in the two by the size of the splined shaft. The 091 being larger, but then that nice Empi one is billet. What was is stronger 🤷‍♂️ Now what did we mod? We drilled the mounting holes larger and taped for larger hardware. Larger mounting hardware = stronger bolts.

We also got a surprise care package from JG Transwerks. Can’t be thankful enough that we are sponsored by great companies like theirs. Need VW trans work please give them a call and support those who are supporting us.

How does one get started in racing class 11? I've been a longtime window shopper so to speak, and think it would be amazing to get into. Just no idea how to get started.

Order a rule book from the governing body and start studying.
It's likely, your car does not conform to the current rules for Class 11.
