This is the original 36 hp engine, and split case transmission.
If I have this correct, the lip of the tin goes in front of the engine and the tab in the center sits on the engine case.
The tin will not go in front of the engine at this small area due to the transmission.
Is the tin wrong?
Looks like I can remove that small oval area?

If you are trying to put that tin on with the engine in the car, it’s not possible. The tab actually hangs on the case and the lip lays against the back of the case. The screws that go into the cylinder head tins, are what hold it on when you install the engine.
That seal looks like it is installed upside down as well, it should be angled up so when you insert the engine, it lays against the tin. _________________ 11/2/54 L227 Strato Silver Ragtop - Soon to be L41 Black - Build Thread

It happens to all of us. I have had to pull my motor a few times after a rebuild to get everything buttoned down. The last time was due to a rebuilt generator having an issue. I was able to pull the engine half way out and get the fan shroud and generator off.
See if you can pull the engine far enough out to get to the seal and install the tin. Much easier than pulling the motor all the way out. _________________ 11/2/54 L227 Strato Silver Ragtop - Soon to be L41 Black - Build Thread

But...since he did ask, ...you *could* shave that little spot off and wouldn't suffer any dire consequences. Either way not an easy part to install with the engine installed. Technically it can be done.
If you have no other reason to remove the engine it'd be something someone might do and never admit and forget you did it.
But you oughtta flip that seal over too, so...you have two reason to pull the engine now.
And you can just unbolt and lower the engine down enough to tackle it if you don't have a ton of other stuff to do at the moment. _________________

I'm putting the engine back in my 55 beetle and the front tin is the same as 2Dokas shows in his photos.
Do understand corrrectly that the bit of tin that he points to in his first picture will go between the engine case and the transmission case at the location circled in his third picture? So at that location the engine and transmission will not be directly against each other?
My picture below show the tin positioned how I think it should go. Close up shows were tin would go between engine and transmission.
Thanks!

If I understand what you are asking, the front tin does NOT sit between the engine and transmission. Those faces touch each other. |

Yes the tin should not pinch between the engine and transmission cases. It wraps around one or the other. They often get bent out of shape and if so it can be hard to tell where it is supposed to fit. The picture shows the little bump out that clears the starter boss. The hooks fit over the engine flange on my 36 horse. _________________ 1-0900722 die langsame grüne Schildkröte

The hook that is visible on the picture of you holding it against the transmission, hooks over the engine case. That should line up the two bolt holes on both ends of the tin, with the cylinder head tins. Insert screws to hold it on. Then put the motor in. Done.
